EGT Sensor placement

I was looking at the Banks Down pipe I bought, and it has a bung welded to it. can I use that for an EGT sensor or should I drill and tap a hole in the exhaust manifold? If I have to drill, where is the best location?

I hope I can post some pictures of the Big Pink Beast on this site fairly soon, I know its nice to link a truck to a poster. Not normally one who names their vehicle, but my Much-Better-Half likes to bug me about my pink truck.

Driver's side manifold near the back is considered the best by most.

i would use the exsisting in the banks kit personally. Just remember post turbo temps are much cooler and compensate for them. 900* max iirc

If it's like mine, the bung in the Banks pipe is the *up* pipe - before the turbo(it's the cast-iron pipe, not the steel one).
Seems like a pretty good place to me; before the turbo, and flowing *all* the cyls into it.

Mine too, I agree that all cylinder gasses hit one spot.. works great

Edit: with that being said what do you think the temp difference is between pre turbo and at the manifold?

Its the downpipe by Banks from Summit. 94 factory turbo. The manifolds are off, so drooling and tapping is no trouble. That's why I'm asking now

Downpipe would be post-turbo, so numbers would be way off (cooler). Go with the manifold location.

Post turbo isnt less accurate, its just different. Every OTR truck i can remember working on has the probe in the DP, as do tractors. That being said, my 088 kit has the probe in the up-pipe because thats where the bung was.

That's okay, turbo does that for some folks, as the turbo spools the driver drools.

I'm looking to install an EGT gauge now, I am putting injectors in now, I would have rather had it prior to install but so it goes. I am installing a new IP in a month and a turbo probably in 2, I think it makes sense to install it in the up pipe during the turbo install but I want to watch how my EGTs change over time so how does installing it in the y pipe sound until I install it in the up pipe?

Also the up pipe is the pipe that connects the manifolds together and routes to the turbo correct?

Thanks
Devin

Most will say to install it in the exhaust manifold. I have it this way. put it right before the elbow in the manifold at the back of the engine.

The pistons will melt first, being aluminum. That's why you want to measure the heat closest to the pistons, as much as possible.
