My 05 6.0 is starting very funny. Normally the motor turns over a couple of times then starts nice and easy. Now occasionally the motor just turns over for a long period of time(say 20 cranks) then starts hard like there is excessive fuel (meaning when it fires the rpm's are jumping high instantly) if that makes any sense.
Now the big problem, occasionally it turns over for a long period of time and won't start. Once it left me stranded for 45 minutes then it just started. Once it started when I pumped the accellerator. This has happened 3 times now an I am sure it will just get worse.
The truck does seem to be warm when this happens. Oil pump for injectors maybe? It is not the batteries, my filters are all clean, only use Mobil diesel. Oil changed with Rotella 15w 40 only every 4000 miles. Truck has 19000 miles. I did just do an oil change. My dealer basically says call me when its dead and wont start or when it has some codes. It has no codes and seems to fire up fine when cold. It is pluged in when below 30 deg. Anything I can check for? Thanks
I just had a similar problem and while it could be a long list of things, I had my dealer check the fuel pressure and the fuel pump inlet restriction. I had a bad fuel pump which would be covered under your warranty ( it didn't throw a code ) there are some other items it may be:
1) high pressure oil pump
2) chafing wire harness by pedals and the upper pass side of engine
3) ???
I wenyt to the 6.0 bible page and went to page 88? looked under the hard start diagnostics and performance diagnostics and there is a check list the tech is supposed to go through.
I just did this dance with my dealer and they did 100% right by me.I wondered how to address this so I "suggested" possible problems and asked if the tech checked these out and what the results were or if he was stumped maybe he could look here or there. Any ways they are people too and if you let them find the problem versus telling them what it is. 1) they are not offended and 2) they get to be the hero that got your rig rolling again.
Any ??? I can try to help but I am still catching up to the knowledge curve here myself

Since you say it usually only does this when the engine is warm, then more than likely it is a leak in the HPOP system and probably at the STC fitting. This is a fairly common problem with the 05 motor. The fitting has now been updated.
thanks for the heads up guys. my truck is going to the dealer on tuesday, hopefully I make it through this next snowstorm on Monday without a hitch. Green monsta, which dealer have you had good luck with? I am in Mass also and have been through a few dealers. I found one but its good to know other good ones
It sounds to me like dummy plugs. Engine starts fine when cold and then when hot or warm it wont or hard start. It will not through a DTC because of what I seen with dummy plugs ICP (injector control pressure) builds just enough say around 300-350 psi, that it will not set a DTC. ICP has to see 500 psi to fire the injectors. 05-07 trucks I have seen this a number of times. The dummy plugs are in the HP oil rails. both banks will need to be replaced. Dummy plugs has two O rings on them on each. The Lower one is always the suspect. after the truck gets out of the 3 year 36k mile warranty the plugs are not covered by the diesel engine warranty. My Service Manager called Ford on the first one I had. Said the plugs was not a part # covered with the 100k 5 year warranty. I just replaced dummy plugs in a E-350 ambulance. those are a pain to replace. I hate Vans with a Passion. It could be the STC Quick connect fitting aswell. But usually you will get a P2290 or P2291 both are ICP DTCs too low, or a cam or crank sensor DTC
Good luck to you.. Hope they can find the problem, if they have a good diesel tech there Id say he has ran into dummy plugs before.

I now use Lamoureux Ford in east brookfield, MA. They are great to deal with. It is right on route 9 about 10 min west of worcester on rte 9 and if you took the pike its 10 min off of the Rte 84 interchange Exit 9.
got the rig back it was the fuel pump( hfcm) no warranty left for that so $625 and its all mine again. They spent alot more time trying to diagnose it they they charged me and they paid for my rental so I am pretty happy all in all.
I will be in touch within the next week for that cat
