Two different starters available for 460 in the 60's-70's...some had the solenoid on the starter motor (Lincoln) some had the solenoid on the firewall. The ones with the solenoid on the starter had more torque. The newer 460 starters (post-1991) have the most torque of any 460 starter.
i spent the money and got the 12 inch fly wheel combo from L and L it was a lil pricey bu i dont have the patience to track everything down they have a good product i recommend buting the whole swap kit
Bill could you post the dia. in inches of all of the BBF flywheels that will bolt to a pre D9 zero balance 429/460 crankshaft?
184
180
176
156
Thanks, Tt
I'd like to help, but I have no klew what FE flywheels will bolt to a 460 crank. Swaps are not my forte.
Ford doesn't list the diameter of the flywheels, only the diameter for the pressure plate bolt circle, which is:
390's are a 12 7/8" diameter, 352/360's are a 12 3/8" diameter.
The same 352/360 and 390 flywheels were used 1965/76 on F100/350's & 1965/71 passenger cars except HiPo's.
The same flexplate (C5AZ-6375-D) was used with the MX Cruise-O and the C6. 1965/76 F100/350, and 1965/71 cars.
finally..i had the aftermarket flywheel (same dia as the 360)drilled for the 11" pressure plate i have($50)(i got tired of looking for one to just bolt on)..flywheel is on (not torqued)pressure plate is on temp (no clutch plate as of yet) top loader is temp mounted and all is mocked up in frame.. i am trying the 85 truck bell housing(aluminum w/ hydraulic clutch release system) so far no problems...i was told to get a 302 pilot shaft bushing...that is on order hoping it will work...i was also told not to use the 85 bell(it has the ball clutch arm pivot) i am not sure why...i have a 400 bell housing and a 429 bell but not hydraulic system for these..so this is why i am trying the 85 first..any more suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated...email me if you want..ajbcc2@charter.net
ok...i had the 184 tooth flywheel drilled and tapped for the 11"pressureplate.i bolted the flywheel on with pressureplate and toploader..all fits....my toploader is for a small block and has the longer input shaft..it only enters the inner crank hole by 1/4"..a 302 pilot bushing doesnt fit the inner or outer crank hole...and if it did in the inner and was flush mount then the tranny would only be engaged by 1/4"..so i got a 390 bushing and it presses right into the outer hole in the crank without modification. A measurement from the bell(where the tranny goes against) to the bushing face shows that the input shaft will engage by 3/4" perfect!
so i have a 1969 460,a 1985 aluminum bell for a 460,a steel flywheel with 184 teeth,a 390 pilot shaft bushing and an 11"clutch and pressure plate..so far so good...now if the starter goes in and works i am golden....thanks so much for everyones help i couldnt have gotten this far without you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
just a sobering thought here..if the vehicle ever gets running and is launched where the small block input shafts decides to say goodbye...then i will have to try and get it redone to a big block(shorter input shaft diff output)and utilize the 429 bell i got or the 400 bell...(does this mean i will be back at square one?)
ok..so far today things went well...i torqued the flywheel on,put the clutch assembly on..mounted the throw out arm with brg, put the mexican top loader in(3spd w/ od, just for fitting mtr/tranny in frame...real toplaoder is apart waiting to be rebuilt.) slave cyl clips onto the bell to mount and all looks good.
I put in an 85 truck starter that the 85 truck bell housing calls for. hooked up a battery and turned the engine over several times...no bad noises ..so i think i got it..
ok i am trying to post the pics here....this is the 1969 460 with a 1985 ford truck 460 bell complete with its hydraulic clutch release system and new starter for that year bell...i used a steel flywheel that had a 12 3/8" bolt spacing for the pressuer plate so i beleive it is for a 360 and a 11" clutch...a 390 pilot bushing was used without modification..the tranny going in is a toploader wide ratio 4spd from a 67 small block mustang..that i just rebuilt but at time of pics a mexican 3spd od was used to see if it all fits...(both trannys have the same dims and input shaft length) i hooked up the starter to a battery and it cranked over without any bad noises..only drawback is no power shifts as i think the 460 would explode that smallblock tranny. Again many thanks to all that contributed to help me out...
