Engine balancing for a 460 w/ 360/390 flywheel

I have a f250 w/ a 460 , converting from a c-6 tranny to a NP435 manual, using 400 bellhousing. Told I can use a 360/390 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. My engine is externally balanced. Do I have to change the harmonic balancer to match the 360/390 flywheel, and if so how do I match up the harmonic balancer to the 360/390 and where can i get a harmonic balancer?

if you have an older engine (pre 79) you wont have no probems. when ever i do this convertion i use a diafram type clutch (like centerforce) and use a pilot bearing for a late 70's 302 itll fit the small hole in the crank. if ya use one that fits the big hole the spline on the trans will hit the pilot bushing and not let the trans meet the bell

ok... you said your engine is externally balanced- that means you cant use the fe block flywheel- those are neutral balance and only work on internally balanced blocks. you could either get your rotating assembly internally balanced, take the hatchet shaped damper spacer off and replace it with a round one, and then use the fe block flywheel, or just go to the parts store and ask for a flywheel for a 1995 f250 with a 460 (or any other year from 1979 to 1997- the newer the vehicle the more likely they are to know what youre talking about and get the right part) then youll have the right balance flywheel and your bearings will live

the 460 flywheel will not work with the 400 bellhousing I have. Was told I can use 360 flywheel/clutch kit. Can I use it on an externally balanced 460. If not then I understand that the 460 Car bellhousing is deeper and would take the 460 flywheel.
Do you know where to find the deeper car bellhousing? Please help, this one thing is holding me up big time. I need clarification asap

Allright, you have a late 460. In order to use the 400 bell and the FE flywheel you have to COMPLETELY disassemble your motor and have it balanced to match the new flywheel.

If you buy a 460 flywheel you can just bolt it on and go, but then you need a bellhousing off of a 79 or newer 460 that came in front of a four speed manual. These can be kinda fun to find as they only really came out between 83 and 87 as the f-series didn't use the 460 between 80 and 83 and the 4 speeds were replaced by 5 speeds starting in 1987.

The third option is to buy a new 460 flywheel and take it and a FE flywheel to a machine shop that does balancing. tell the guy to balance the FE flywheel to match the 460 flywheel. I don't know how much imbalance a 460 uses, but if it isn't too much they can drill a recess into the back of the flywheel and put a chunk of mallory metal in it. Then return the 460 flywheel and you're only out for the balancing fee.

Take your pick.

Why wouldn't just use a bell hosuing off a 370 truck and the correct 460 flywheel.

Forgot about the 370. A bellhousing from between a 370 and a 4 speed will also allow you to use the late 460 flywheel.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, and I've researched this a bit and haven't found an easy answer except as usual the almighty dollar fixes all. Yes, you can rebalance the 360/390 flywheel to an external match or machine down a 460 flywheel (it's to thick to fit) or space out the bellhousing or find a 370 bellhousing or get an 80's bellhousing which will require converting to a hydraulic clutch OR...just buy a flywheel from L and L Products. They sell a flywheel and clutch package that includes the needed pilot bearing, hardware, etc. Sure it's expensive, but you pay for having a bolt on solution with no headaches. Having exhausted all my options, I have to order from L and L Products.

TIP: If you buy from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard it is much cheaper than buying from L and L directly.

Aloha,

Wade
