460 marine engines
460 marine engines
Does anyone know where to look for a pair of 460 marine engines complete with exhaust and transmissions. My boat has a pair of Chris Craft 430's (MEL series 430 cid) and I figure I could rebuild a pair of 460's for a lot less. However since the transmission bolt pattern of a 430 is different from the 460, I need the transmissions too. Also one of the engines will have to be opposite rotation.
Thanks,
Paul

I know this a few weeks old, but did you ever find your engines?
My friend and neighbor owns a boat service & storage business and does a lot of gas to diesel swaps. I could ask him if he has any or knows where to look if you're still interested.

I wish you luck finding a pair of marine inboard Ford engines. Last I remember was that OMC used to sell a Ford BB King Cobra inboard-outboard, but not sure if they were sold as an inboard installation with transmission. Flatbottom jets used to come with a Ford BB, but they didn't have transmissions.
It may be easier to repower with (ahem) a pair of Chevy mercruisers. There are lots of those parts lying around boat yards or available from any merc dealer.
My brother has looked at a few of those older Chris's, and he noted that many of those have been repowered with Chevvies. You could always visit your local CAT dealer, but take your extra big checkbook with you.

thanks for the replys. no i have not had any luck finding a 460 inboard. the last post seems to jive with what i have found; the 460 was available up until 1993 in the OMC stern drive configuration.
Yes, the GM 454 is the popular repower engine in the 300 hp range but I've had two different pickups with that engine and personally rather not try that route again. It is kind of sad that Ford has elected to just hand over the marine engine segment to GM.
As far as mine go I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay the extra money (the rebuild kit is $1,300 per engine) and freshen up the MEL 430s'.

If I was in your shoes.. I currently am in a way.. bite the bullett and either rebuild what you have..or what I would do is find the mercs and swap those in. BB Mercruisers are cheap, parts are readily available and can be had almost anywhere.
I'm rebuilding a 460 for the 87 vindicator I have (bought it w/o the engine) and it's been a major headache. OMC stuff is just too rare.
