Hey guys, I have officially swapped motors. I traded in my 2004 6.0 for a 2002 7.3. The truck is identical to my old 6.0, same color, same amount of lift, 4 door crew cab short bed, lariat edition, just about everything. Plus they let me swap all of my custom parts, bumper, wheels, flares, grill, I even swapped seats and console since my 6.0 had buckets. Worked out pretty sweet!
I was having trouble trusting my 6.0, and when I saw this 7.3 sitting on the lot I couldnt pass it up. It has 80,000 miles, I dont see any major oil leaks (oil pan is clean) its seems to run great, its shifts a little harder than my 6.0 did, but that might be normal, not sure?
I took it for about a 30 mile drive up the highway, I got 20 mpg according to the lie-o-meter, wow! And this is with a 4inch lift. My 6.0 would have gotten like 14-15mpg. It came with a superchips programmer, and according to the owners records its been installed since 2003. This worried me a bit, however it has a EGT gauge intalled and he had written down on the box not to tow in the in the higher horse tune.. So this kinda showed he was keeping on eye on things. It doesnt have a gooseneck installed so he must not have towed anything too heavy. Would you guys be worried about this??? Also, should I get rid of it for something else?? DP tuner??
Also, Ive been running 5w-40 rotella synthetic in my 6.0, Should I run this in my 7.3?? Also how many quarts?? cus in our 6.0s we run about a qt less than what the owners manual said.
Also I think maybe I should do a trans fluid flush, Any certain fluid recemended??
Im obviously new to the 7.3 so anything else I should know would be very appreciated!! Thanks alot for any help! Oh, and by the way, I had an oasis report ran on it and nothing major showed up, so that was good.
Congrats on the new truck well new to you any way. The 7.3 takes 4 gallons of oil and yes alot of the guys here run 5w40 make sure to put 2 quarts of oil in the oil filter before installing it since these trucks have spin on filters. Here is a very go site to have bookmaked since you now have a 7.3.
As for the trans I would change the fluid and filter but the trans is also the weak point on these trucks. My other truck shifted hard but it also and a shift kit in it.
I drive my Uncles 6.0 and then I drive my 7.3 and something you will figure out is... the 7.3 isnt as quick as a 6.0 but its got more low end *****! I would put a 7.3 against a 6.0 anyday in a tug-o-war. Just my .02cents
Congrats. The 7.3 should treat you well. I bought my 2002 last year with 60k on it, now have just a hair under 80. It was bone stock when I got it, but now I can hang with beat the 6.0s (or any other diesel), unless they're tuned pretty heavy. I still have to see how I'm doing against my buddy's BullyDog tuned '05 350 King Ranch DRW. My goal is to at least hang with him -- his is very quick, but he's been through all his injectors at least once, head & intake gaskets, and turbo. The old joke around here is not to race a 6.0 in the 1/4 mile, but to 500k towing heavy.
I'd recommending going to www.ford.com and run your VIN number and see if your vehicle is subject to the CMP sensor recall. If it's on the list, you can either buy the part for about $25 or have the dealer install it for free. The original black CMP sensors seem to be the primary weak link on the 7.3's. I own two of them and have done nothing but replace the CMP sensors and normal maintenance. They're the T444E Navistar engine which is a tried and true commercial fleet engine.
Thanks guys! Right now this thing runs as strong as my 6.0. So it must have this tuner installed, maybe thats causing the harder shifts. Am I alright to run this superchips tuner or should I get rid of it? Thanks.
hundreds of thousands of school busses and garbage trucks can't be wrong. Since you have the lift, and all the gussied up goodies swapped from the 6.0, that means all your money can go to go faster goodies.
Definately a move up. I wouldn't get ride of my "old" 7.3 for anything. I just had my CPS replaced at the local dealership; it only took about 15 minutes. Now I have much more piece of mind.
Hey Adam I wanna see this truck. So was this a costly deal or was it too bad. Just curious. Good Luck
It was pretty much a straight across trade, they gave me 26k for my 6.0, and I payed 25 for this 7.3. But since Ive been able to swap anything I wanted from my 6.0 it worked out pretty good. I even swapped the stereo, overhead display, front windows, tailgate, rear bumper........ I pretty much have a 2004 superduty with a 7.3
Ill get pics up soon. However it looks just like the truck in my gallery..
