I've never seen that ad before, I guess the hwy estimated 30 mpg in that ad was a little over exaggerated. I can barely touch 20 mpg with my 95 in overdrive with a 2.73 rear end. Good to see that ford had those ads back then though.
Yeah, the best mpg I've ever heard of a 4.9L was maybe 21, carb'd. The norm is about 16 - 17 I think. Does ANYBODY know if this was a real commercial??? I think it's kind of neat Ford advertising a six.
So the commercial was real. Can anyone explain why it advertised 30 mpg though? That's like saying the 300 can pull a mountan off it's foundation. The best MPG I got strickly highway with short tires and 3.08's was almost 17 mpg. Surely not 30. What does the EPA stand for? "EPA 20" ??? I know commercials lie about their product, but JEEZ. ha ha
EPA- Environmental Protection Agency - A very controversial organization to say the least, but It is what the name implies.
30 mpg is a long shot and I do not know why they used that figure. It could be gotten from a test with controlled conditions, or even on chassis dyno.
Who knows.
If you buy a new truck today - the way that MPG figures are calculated are different from when this commercial was made.
MPG ratings are now lower - similar models between 06 and 07 will have different MPGs (07 lower) due to different calculations. I think due to the EPA.
(different driving styles from the 70s, called for changes)

That makes sense. It would be great if the 300 DID get 30 mpg though. A guy can dream, right?
Back in those days, most car companies were trying to boast the BEST mileage that their engine could possibly get. These figures were estimated under the most perfect of conditions, such as coasting for 100 miles on the perfect flats, never changing speed ONCE, never changing gears, no headwind, just perfect, flawless, smooth sailing in the sweet spot speed, probably 55mph. Under those conditions I imagine the 6 would reach in the upper 20s, maybe even 30.
Nowadays, gas mileage has to be calculated based on regular, every day driving.
At home I have an original sales brochure that says that the Bronco got 27mpg highway and 19 city. Personally, I get around 16 city and 21 highway but I'm pretty gentle with my gas pedal. So I imagine that those high numbers are possible, just not reasonable.
30 mpg is possible, downhill with a tailwind in neutral. Not safe but is possible. Best I ever got was 20 from Phoenix to Grand Junction, 50 mph average, 3.08 diff, 1,000 lbs of appliances in the back. (a truck in the convoy was a brand "C" that would only do about 50)
That commercial was actually aired, I remember seeing it. The MPG claims were a little high. Notice it showed 20MPG as EPA est, and 30MPG as hwy est.
The 20 MPG is actually closer to what most were capable of getting, when spec'ed out like the one used for that commercial. 4.9l, 4 spd O/D, and tall gearing in the rear, somewhere in the 2.75-3.00 range. I'm sure the 30 MPG est was based on a best case, perfect conditions, controlled environment.
My 1980 will get close to 18MPG on the highway, and it doesn't have an O/D trans, but it does have the 2.75 rear gears. It will drop to ~12MPG with a trailer carrying a car.
No matter what the actual MPGs were for the 300. That 6cly engine is one of the best tanklike engines ever built. I ran the one I had in my 77 with very little oil in it and it kept going no matter what.
Since EPA mileage testing was done on a dyno (read: no air resistance) with max speeds of 55mph and very small acceleration rates, it's possible that a truck with a 300 could get 30 mpg.
However, once it comes off the dyno, 30mpg is absurd.
