Apologies if I missed an existing answer to my question -- I did look for one.
My '03 F250 has 87K miles on the 7.3L PSD. Recently I put on the big Ford intake and a 4" SS exhaust. Also used a programmer to liven up the performance (I'm at level 2 of a 3-level programmer). Everything works like a dream, except one not so minor item.
When I stand on it in 5th or 6th gear at any RPM over 1,500 the clutch slips -- the RPM goes up rapidly then falls back as speed steadily increases. This doesn't happen in the lower gears, and the truck really moves off the line at stoplights.
The clutch worked fine before the mods, so I assume the increased power is causing the problem. What have others done in this situation? For now I'm avoiding applying full power in the upper gears.
Seems to me that the question you are asking is whether the standard clutch, if operating correctly, would be strong enough in light of your power enhancements. And if not, do people recommend getting a beefier transmission or rebuild...
Personally, if you're just making casual Big ***** Eating Grin moves, I'd just replace the clutch on what you've got.
