My big (133" wheelbase)'73 F-100 2wd presently has a 302 with 3 speed manual and 9". It's a good engine but for a truck this big the performance is rather lacking. I've been thinking about swapping to a 460 and am wondering what frame mods (mounts, springs-etc.) I'll need to do to get it to fit? I'd like to stay with a manual tranny if any will fit, or did that engine just come with a C-6? What years were the 460's made and what was the stock HP/torque? I have a good 9" rear with 3.50's but just 28 spline axles. Will it hold up? I'm a pretty good mechanic. Any advice will be appreciated. Polkat
Hey! You probably have a 360 in that truck. I am doing the same swap. From what I hear You are going to need an engine first then you are going to need frame perches from a ford truck that had a 460 in it or buy a kit from landlproducts. I went the cheap route and searched the world over(it feels like)to find these mounts. You will also need truck exhaust manifolds or headers.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-02 AT 09:26 PM (EST)]Thanks for the replys guys. Yes, I meant 460 in the header. The truck presently has a 302 in it with very many miles on it, yet it runs good. But this is the big (133" wheelbase) F-100 ('73) 2wd and the performance has always been lacking. I've got a friend with a 429 in a similar truck, and wow!, it runs like the truck is weightless!! I am assuming that a 460 (or 429 for that matter!) and C-6 swap is only a matter of mount towers and exhaust stuff (I have a BIG Modine radiator in there now and a 9" rear).
My main questions were as follows: The 302 has a 3 speed manual in it. Since it's unlikely this three speed will work with a big block, will the crossframe piece that the tranny mounts to, work with the 4xx/C-6 setup? Will I need a specific oil pan? And will (I'm betting yes) my present two piece driveshaft have to go? And what about springs? Lastly, how hard is it to find a cheap but rebuildable 429 or 460? That's all I need to know. Thanks, Polkat
I favor the NP-435 tranny for trucks. They got the low granny first gear, a cast iron case, and are cheap. I got one with a pto and a drum brake for $100. You gotta watch the input shaft though. They are longer on some and won't fit the shallow 460 bell. I assume this length is for the FE series engines since thats the bell that came with it. Another variation is the output shaft bolt pattern. One is for a married transfer case and one without. Anyway, I have all three variations and all parts are interchangeable. You could go with a T-5, but I wouldn't. I know a guy with a 2.8L that blew one of those. You could look here though http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index.shtml
I hear the bells from a 351M/400 will fit the 460 block, don't know much about that, but its what I hear. I also hear the flywheel from a 360-390 series will with the crank of a 460. Here's a link for you http://www.#####.com/Techtalk.htm
As far as mounts go, I don't know much. If it don't fit, I make my own and play it by ear as I go.
I don't see whats wrong with a 2 piece shaft, but I'd rather stick a transfer case in the middle and use one nice heavy shaft. But thats me. I currently have a 333:1 lowest ratio at the wheels, really neat!
Have a look here too http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm
Hmm, something about this link http://www./#####.com/Techtalk.htm must not be allowed here. Well, I guess do a search for "MAKE A TWO WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK INTO A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK" and google may turn something up.
