429 Rebuild
Here's a strange one for you guys. I've got a 429/c6(4bbl) out of a '72 LTD wagon. I'm currently stuffing it into a '88 Mustang race car.(yeah, yeah, it's not a truck, but I need something to pull behind my F-150)
This is my second time around building one of these so I already have a lot of the parts to install it fabbed up or located. The making it fit part has already been worked out.
I'm also running a truck oil pan/pump and dynomax truck headers.(you gotta just love having a welder)
Anyhow, I'm planning on running the car in a natl' contest in April held by Grassroots Motorsports(I don't know if I can mantion them here?)
The only rules are;
the car must have it's stock dash, all lights, wipers, remain more or less street legal, and you can only spend $2003 total.
The competition includes;
a drag race, autocross, and a car show.
I only have about $1000 to spend on building the motor, what do you guys suggest?
I had this motor in my last car and managed a 13.3 out of it. It was running out of gas about 1/2 way through 2nd and it has 175k on it.(not that either are related) It was kinda a last minute job and never got to work the bugs out.(+ building the car at 5200 ft and racing it at sea level was a bit of an issue) It has an old Edelbrock Street Master intake on it and a Carter AFB. I don't know the CFM though.
How much would be too much carb for something like this?
Should I pitch the Carter and pick up a Holley?
I was thinking of a mild cam, replacing the intake with something newer, and basically going through the motor.
Anything I should look out for?
I heard that the later timing gear sets actually retard the cam timing, is this true?
The C-6 is bomb-proof, but my take on it is there really suppose to be power robbers.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
