Memphis Belle you know that B17 bomber that comes to the Canada remebers airshow, it's about that airplane.
The Memphis Belle was the first bomber airplane to sccessfully make 25 bombing missions over **** territory for the Americians. It may not sound like a big achievement but the average lifespan for a aircrew in WW2 was 13 missions usually by then you were dead, or in German POW camp. If I remeber right the casuality rate percent was 80%.
If I remeber right no Canadian crew ever made the 50 mission mark, when they got to come home. I remeber hearing of a crew that on their 48th mission were landing but the hydralics got shot so they ran into something and blew up. (coulda put that gentler I guess)
At the hotel I'm staying at there is a trainer bomber plane that was used and crashed killed 4 guys in training, whoever restored it did a really good job I did not believe them when I read that it crashed so hard killed all of the crew.
I thought there were a few Canadian bombers that did complete 50 missions. But I cannot recall any famous names or such. But it is true that most never made it that far. Most never made it past the 15 mission.
Mephis Belle was a great movie. One ofthe few that kept me on the edge of my seat. Saving Private Ryan was another. That was just too realistic. The reason why the Americans suffered high casuality's on D Day was they were trying to rescue their wounded. Where the Canadians left the wounded where they fell. It may seem barbaric, but they knew if they tried to help they were targets then too.
Not saying what the Americans did was not right either. I think most of us would try and help our comrades when they are hit to get them to cover and safety.

The americans also ignored many good ideas used by teh otehr forces ie flail tnaks used by the british. the entire landing was botched, no fault of the soldiers on the ground, but the leaders that stayed back. Paratroopers dropped in worng positions partly due to overloaded gliders, ineffective bombardment, ineffective gathering of intelligence reagarding troop movements,
just an all around sad situation, but defiently cant knock teh soldiers on the ground, history has shown us that they did damn good.
