I need some help with a really old mid 70's generac MC-38 generator. It is a wiring nightmare! There is about 30 wires that go nowhere. Anyone know where to maybe find a diagram?A google search got me nothing.
Can you define "go nowhere"? Where do the wires originate, or what are they hooked up to now? Hopefully you don't need any parts, because most parts for those are no longer available from Briggs and Stratton who bought Generac in 2003 or so-
Also, look for any other model numbers, plates, etc, and I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram for it...
I can go out and look at it some more. The wires are all number T5-T20 and are coming out of the junction box. It has electric start and electronic ignition. So there is a lot of wires.
The electronic ignition should be self contained and only require a kill wire. The electric start will have wires going from the start switch, to the solenoid, then to the starter, depending on what type of starter is being used. Battery will have a ground wire, then the positive goes to the solenoid. There should be wires going to each side of the brushes, and a ground that grounds in the end cap of the generator. If you have more than 10 wires, I would say the rest of them probably belong inside the junction box, and go to the breakers and plug terminals.
This is all from memory, so I may be off a little, but I'll look it up at work in the morning and post a diagram.
No... My parts lookup does not have the MC-38 on there- the closest I had was the MC-4500... I called Briggs and am waiting for a call back. If they don't get back to me by tomorrow, I will call them again.
My next question is what engine does this thing have. There is no markings on it or HP rating. I need a carb rebuild kit but the carb only has a single stamp of "213".

If it is a Briggs, it should have it stamped into the blower housing somewhere. Usually on the top, or side near the top. Might have to clean/sand to be able to read it. Should have 3 sets of numbers there which will be Model/Serial/Code.
My distributor doesn't have anything on the generator, but they gave me the number to call Briggs Portable Power (formerly Generac) directly. It is a consumer line, so I'll give you the number so you can deal with them directly.

As for the engine, it is likely a Generac-built engine, or made by a manufacturer by the name of Nagamo, both of which are no longer in business. There is a place in South Carolina (IIRC) that has some Nagamo parts, but I don't know of anyone that has any Generac engine parts anymore. Best bet for those is a google search, or ebay.
Sorry I can't give you the complete answer and solve your problem, but at least its a step in the right direction.
Try some old rental or small-engine repair shops locally. Maybe someone will have a grimy old manual on the shelf. Ask them if they can suggest someplace else.
