i found a 90 model fullsize bronco for really cheap, and its not bad lookin. But it has that crappy push button 4x4. Anyone ever took that solenoid off and put a shifter in it? It has manual lockin hubs, and i dont trust that push button stuff.

The FSB has the BW 13-56 tcase regardless of whether it is manual shift or has the electric motor to shift it. while the guts are the same, half of the case is different. Plus the electric shift has a computer control module in the cab.
You would have to do a tcase swap to go manual. I bet that thing works o.k. though. These are pretty good tcases.
ive had that t case before and i like it. But i also had a FSB with the automatic lockin hubs and every time i got the front end in a bind it would disengage then reengage when i straightened up. since that ive been knid of gunshy of that kind of equipment. Appreciat the info though.

In my '90, I have the electric shift tcase, but I replaced the auto hubs long ago.
The weakest link in that 4x4 system isnt the electric t-case but it does run a close second with the TTB. The auto hubs are the worse parts, but it depends on how much use/abuse the PO had of the system. An abused truck may not show problems until awhile after you have had it, and then it is too late to really go back on the deal. A well maintained and used machine will still have problems, but so does everything that comes with age.
My FSB has the electronic solenoid in it and I haven't had any problems with mine. It lives a pretty sheltered life though. It does see mud sometimes and when it does I hit the button and the squirrliness goes away, same goes for ice. I would think tat with the 33" tires it would be harder on the system than stock tires, but I have no problems, even when turning around in the mud and cranking the front wheels all the way around. I have a set of manual lockouts sitting in my shop I just haven't gotten around to changing them yet.
My '96 EB Bronco had the auto hubs replaced by Warn units before I got it, but still has the push button to engage them on the dash. So far it has not shown any problems. I use the Bronco as my daily driver in winter weather with the front hubs locked in all the time, basically, and when I need 4WD, I simply let off the throttle (shift into neutral if I'm sitting still), and hit the button. It never has shown the least bit of binding, etc.
I'd go along with the opinion of leaving it alone while it is still in good working order and going with a manual set-up if it ever does tank on ya.
I put mine in an out of 4L several times once a month even if it has to be while sitting in my driveway. When I go to the deer lease I run it in 4L even if it is only 200 yards and make a U-turn in the dirt to keep everything free and lubricated. Previous owner was a travelling saleslady and she had not used 4wd in years. It took several attempts to free up the electric shift but it always works great now.
Mine has failed twice in the 240K miles I have had it but each time I just take the electric motor apart and clean up the armature with sandpaper and it goes to working again. I also want to change to manual so I don't get stuck somewhere that it won't work but I haven't gotten mad enough to take that on, I guess, because so far it has always worked when I really needed it to.
I would like to add that I *love* TTB. Best 4x4 front-end ever invented IMO.
mine is all screwed up. i just took my sylinoid motor apart, and since my truck's lifted, i just slide under and shift it by hand! maybe not the cleanest way, but it works for me :-)
Mine only works sometimes after extensive fiddling, must have some bad wiring or might have to try jas88's solution, before I get really stuck .......Roy
