Underbody coatings? HELP!
So, I'm just gonna ask you guys. What do you think is the best stuff to use to protect against rust? I am puttin a new bed on my 79 250 and I want to put something on the underside of it to keep it from rusting out on me like my current bed did. The bed is pretty solid except for a few spots I can fix, so I want to do this right(and only once). Good beds are like gold out here so they are tough to come by. The truck sees alot of mud and dirt so I need something pretty tough. I was looking at POR-15, Rust Bullit, or the Eastwood stuff, but of course they all claim to be the best. Does anyone have any experience with any of them? Has anyone had any of them on their truck for any length of time?
Thanks.
I almost got rust bullit, but I heard more good things about por-15.
If you use a good top coat, you shouldn't have any problems with the por 15.
I would look at colored bedliner (such as durabak) for the whole thing so
1) it does not chip when hit by rocks underneath
2) scratches from trees and brush do not rust it on the sides
3) salty water sitting in the bed does not rust it around the bed bolts or where it mounts to the frame.
Plus, I would put a plastic drop in over the rails bed liner in it over the painted on bed liner. I have seriously dented beds from throwing things into the bed, especially the wheel wells on a Dodge.
It wouldn't hurt to drill two 1/2" holes in the front of the bed for draining, insert metal tubes, weld them to the bed and then put bedliner on the whole deal.
If this is too much money and effort, spray on used motor and gear oil and drive over a dusty road afterwards. I have seen 1950s F-series last this way for 40 years in New England snowy weather owned by old school mechanics.
