Unhappy Glowplug system problem

I have an 86' 6.9 with an updated (1987) glowplug controller. Now when I drive to work early in the morning (usually dark)...my headlights dim every few seconds when my glowplug light indicator kicks on. It cycles quickly and randomly until I get to work. This happens well after the truck has reached operating temp. too. This freaks out the drivers ahead of me so I am compelled to try and fix this.

The other odd thing now is that if I just take a very short trip and get the engine slightly warmed up. The glowplugs will not come on and the engine isn't quite warm enough to start without them. Forgive me.....but then I need to use starting fluid to get home. Any thoughts on where to get started to find the problem. I am a firefighter....not a mechanic so please go easy on me. Thanks!

The updated controller is not likely compatable with the old style glowplug. The glow plugs need to be in good shape an have the proper resistance hot to turn the controller off. Coming on all the time will likely burn them out!?

I would either get all of the GP system updated to new type, or as advised, get the old style components, but rig up a push to activate button.

Depends on how it was changed over.

Was the new style controller/relay mounted where the old style relay was ?

If your glow plugs are turning on while driving, they will be dead in short order.

The original old style system was top of the line, until it starts malfunctioning.
Then it is a true nightmare to fix.

Is this the relay/controller you are now running?
