I have an 86' 6.9 with an updated (1987) glowplug controller. Now when I drive to work early in the morning (usually dark)...my headlights dim every few seconds when my glowplug light indicator kicks on. It cycles quickly and randomly until I get to work. This happens well after the truck has reached operating temp. too. This freaks out the drivers ahead of me so I am compelled to try and fix this.
The other odd thing now is that if I just take a very short trip and get the engine slightly warmed up. The glowplugs will not come on and the engine isn't quite warm enough to start without them. Forgive me.....but then I need to use starting fluid to get home. Any thoughts on where to get started to find the problem. I am a firefighter....not a mechanic so please go easy on me. Thanks!
get rid of glow plug controller and wire in a push button works like a champ every time just need to count to ten or more on really cold mornings Dave S has the diagram for this
The updated controller is not likely compatable with the old style glowplug. The glow plugs need to be in good shape an have the proper resistance hot to turn the controller off. Coming on all the time will likely burn them out!?
I would either get all of the GP system updated to new type, or as advised, get the old style components, but rig up a push to activate button.
