I was changing my fuel filter and noticed a lot of rust/dirt in the bottom of the filter housing. I plan on taking of the standpipe to really get in there aand clean it all out. I noticed a curved wire sitting on top of three circular spacers on the base where the filter sits. What is this?? I have a picture but cant figure out how to load it on here. Does this part have a purpose, if not i think ill toss it. I just joined webshots and put the pics up there. I hope this link works : http://community.webshots.com/album/...host=community
When you remove the stand pipe remmber that it is LEFT HAND THREADS. The wire is the fuel heater. You can disconnect it, but IIRC you still need the plate as a spacer for the stand pipe.
To clean the filter housing you can either remove it and clean it or use a couple of cans of brake cleaner to spray out the housing with the water drain valve open, just make sure that you let all of the brake cleaner evaporate before you replace your filter and close it up.

Reason: spelling
i use brakleen on mine, depending on the brand decides how long it takes to evaporate.....worse case blow on it she goes away quick. but if the drain is open it will run out for the most part and you can watch the residue disapear. my wire is broken and ford quoted 65 bucks as wholesale. i am debating the superduty mod but dont feel like pulling my canister off to do it, i may take another look and drill it out incab, if you use grease on the drill point i dont think there will be many loose shavings and a clean rag and some brakleen should take care of any stragglers.
Flea, like c00nhunterjoe said, it only takes about 5-10 min. for it to evaporate because most of it will run out of the water drain. If it's hot or you have a fan blowing it takes even less time. You just don't want that stuff mixed with your fuel.
Sweet. I need to do that and change my FPR screen.
What is the SD mod on the fuel bowl you speak of?
I swear, every day I am on this site I hear of a new mod to do to my truck. I just can't keep up with ya fellas.
i tell my gf that I have PMS but she doesn't buy it.
yup, the sd mod simply puts the superduty heater into our truck. its almost direct fit but there is a tab in our housing that keeps the stock element from spinning when the filter is tightened. the superduty element hits this tab and wont let it sit flat so the filter wont go in. you have to remove a small portion of that tab to get the element to sit flush. after that its the same set up but with a huge fuel heater vs our rinky dink coat hanger
Thanks for all the good guys. Im not sure I want to go with the superduty mod or not. Will i be okay for now if i just disconnect the wire for the heater element?

you will not have any problem if you disconnect the wire, and in Hawaii you dont needed it, it is only neccesary if it is REALLY cold (artic ).
