Hey all...
I am puttin a tranny in a 98 Ranger. 3.0, 2wd. Does this truck require Mercon V, or can I run regular ATF? The owner's manual is gone from the truck, and Mercon V isn't stamped on the dipstick tube. I need to know pretty quick, so I can get this job done and gone...
actually mercon v supersedes and can be used in older mercons, i believe. correct me if i'm wrong. but if you read the label on the merc v it should tell you.
Don't mix Mercon and Mercon V. There are threads in the Explorer and/or Expy threads giving the Ford TSB and engineering studies stating they do not mix. Even a flush doesn't get all the old out. I forget the tranny #s for each but some trannies changed the fluid type effective with certain years. The stick is where to look but yours might not state which? I'd wait for a specific answer from someone with that specific year tranny. Not much help here but be sure what you need before adding I'd suggest..
Right you are.. I woner what Ford would say about the 2 plus year old TSB copy I have stating to service managers, do NOT mix them to include flushes? Guess they had a bunch of Mercon to get rid of??

Like today's "water saving" toilets, flush twice...
I finally got my head out of my butt and looked at the dipstick itself...it had Mercon V. The reason for my inquiry is that I didn't want to have to by that expensive stuff unless it was absolutely necessary. But I had too...but it is all together, and got the cash in pocket for the job...so it is all good
