Bleach for traction?

Had a friend that told me that if you use Clorox to pour under your tires it will melt the snow and ice and allow you to get traction to get out. Has anybody heard of this? Might be handy to know if it works.

i realy dont see how that would work, theve been using bleach at the drags for years to get the slicks TO spin to heat'em up.kinda the oposite of geting more traction. a bag of softener salt in the back will work better

A little cat litter and a gentle throttle will often work.

I would think pouring any liquid on snow or ice would melt it and give you a spot for traction, but bleach is kind of slippery. As mentioned above it would probably be low on the list of things to try.

I have a friend that mixes salt and cat litter together. The salt melts the snow/ice and the cat litter absorbs the water. Or you can use oil dry instead of cat litter.

It will not work well and you are better off pouring hot water then bleach. At least water isn't slippery. Plus, all that bleach will then be on your truck/car.

The reason they use bleach at race tracks is

1) it is slippery

2) it eats the rubber and makes the surface gummy

so when you pull up to the line you have a soft hot gummy tire.

The last thing you want when on ice is a hot gummy tire because it is the melting surface water that creates a film that robs you of traction. That is the reason good snow tires are siped. The tire squeezes the water film into the sipe so you have direct contact between the tire and road.

Pouring a slippery caustic liquid between the tire and road while on ice doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Remember, bleach is about 95% water!

It sounded kind of fishy to me, but strange ideas sometimes work. Was just wondering. I just didn't like the idea of carrying around something that might spring a leak.
