> in a very inconvenient location (Chinatown in Boston)
Your info says North Shore, it has been six years since I was in MA, but, I use to give blood at the Red Cross Center in Peabody (forget the street name ... across from Bunghole Liquors).
I know they "use" to do the platelets and stuff because my cousin use to go there on the same day I went to give blood, and it use to take the three hours or so for him with the (fore reese it ? <- don't know how to spell it) machine.
You should check it out, it is easy to get to from either 1A or RT128
The Peabody location moved to Danvers and I can actually see the ugly glass building from my house...but I have been going to C-town for years and the people are great there.
My employer does a blood drive every 8 weeks, like BlueOvalRanger said we get 4 paid hours to do it. I've signed up for every one of them since I've been there, normally I sign up for Friday afternoon. Nothing like saving a few lives while starting the weekend early and enjoying a cheap buzz.

Just be careful of that cheap buzz - I passed out once after giving blood and having a beverage....I'd love to know the affect that donating blood has on tolerance for alcohol. I'd think it would make your BAC shoot way up since you have less blood - even though it gets replaced quickly.
Going bright and early tomorrow to give another round of platelets....fist alcohol free New Year in many, many years. It's worth it I guess.
I'll confess. I've only given very intermittently, even though I'm O-pos and generally healthy. I maybe make it in every 2-3 years at best. I'll have to get on that this year. I just don't care for waiting around afterwards, as I don't ever have any issues. I get a chuckle out of talking to the nurses--I have huge, easy-to-***** veins, and I don't mind watching one bit. Heck, if I ever had surgery, I would want to be awake to watch it...
