i have a rare blood type.a series of events a few years ago, prompted me to become a blood donor.(my wife Heather's 26 year old best friend had leucheimia and died after 8 months of trying to beat it.) we saw how much a demand there is for blood in the hospital, they always seem to need it,so we became donors.i was wondering how many others are blood donors?
I used to as often as I could when I lived a block away from the donor clinic but after several piercings and the 12 month wait after each, I hadn't been able to for quite a while. They were sure to call me as soon as I was eligible as I also have a rare blood type but it's the type that anybody can use.
I donate whenever posssible, now they take twice as much blood from me when I donate too. which helps out at the bar. I also donate plasma...but I get paid for that.
They are always happy to see me, I have A neg, the only rarer type is my wife, AB neg...But I did it regular until my back surgery, but am back into it again. Hit the gallon mark finally...
I am almost to my 2 gallon mark, just I have not donated much the last two years because of the hours (they only open at 2:30 pm once a month) and having to take my five kids with me when I do.
I have been giving blood since I was old enough in high school. After one of my cousins died of leukemia and I became more aware of the high demand and low supply for blood products, I started giving platelets. I have been doing so on a regular basis for the last seven or eight years. I just gave platelets and red cells on Friday and am scheduled to give platelets again on Tuesday.
It's time consuming (three hours), uncomfortable and in a very inconvenient location (Chinatown in Boston) but since so few people can and very few of those will give platelets, I figure it is the least I can do.
I have many issues with the American Red Cross but their work on blood donation is something I will support.
Have donated off and on since 1979. Close to 4 gallons now. I am a diabetic on insulin and at one time could not give because of that. Now they take my blood, no problem. Have worked as a paramedic since 1994 and see the need often. All you donors are life savers.
Thanks now for in the future I (and you or your loved ones) may need it.
