What distributor will work well with my 460? It is a 1977 block, D0VE heads, Comp 4X4 hydraulic cam, L&L headers, 0 degree timing chain set. Will the stock electronic ignition distributor be okay, if rebuilt, or will I be better off with an Acel or MDS aftermarket? Engine will live in my street truck with C6 and 3.5:1 rear. Thanks!
I do not race my F-100, but the Mallory electronic dizzy I've been using works fine for me - hasn't let me down in 1 1/2 years and always cranks up on the 1st turn of the switch.....
I know it's not a "racing" dizzy, but if I wanted to race I'd have set this 460+ down into a Mustang; I'm just interested in cruisin'....
I have almost the same setup in my 1984 Bronco, I used an MSD-8350 Ready to run pro-billet Dizzy. Mostly because I wasn't sure of the condition of the stock ford ignition that was connected the 351W that was in their originally. I like it, works well though it was $275.
I run an MSD Pro Billet in my 460, DOVE block and heads. It wouldn't work with the brain in my 78 (check your application) so I ditched the brain for an MSD 6AL box. It's a top notch unit with a built in rev-limiter incase the driveline lets loose. This set-up starts easy and has been reliable and performed well for 4 years. On the other hand, it'll be much cheaper to rebuild your stock dizzy.
I run an MSD "ready to run". It runs great. If you decide to use this one make sure you get it recurved before installing. MSD ships thier dist with what they call shipping springs on the advance weights. To get by, take off the heavy silver springs (shipping springs) and put the light weight blue and light weight silver springs on. These will get you close tell you can get it recurved.
