Hello everyone
Well, I have some questions about my 1970 F100, with a 360 4 speed. Probably about 2 weeks ago I was driving and getting off an exit, and all of a sudden the truck started to choke and miss and backfire. I got it back to school, but the thing ran aweful. I replaced points, condenser, plugs wires and cap, and checked my fuel filter and fuel pump. After this it ran well enough to get home and still runs, but has issues. When cold, it misses alot, and evertime I shift gears and engage the clutch, the truck acts almost like its totally out of time (almost sounds like if you were moving quick down a hill and shut the key off, and it still is kind of running...its really hard to explain), but when I get on the gas good it runs fairly normal. even when the truck is warm I will hear an occasional miss and it occasionally hesitates when I shift. The truck never did it before, and I am not sure where go to next. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you
Garrett

Possibles:
Out of time / timing gears worn / fuel filter in the pump clogged up / bad accelerator pump & check valve.
My guess is that you jumped your timing, as NumberDummy indicated to . This probably happed when you used your gears to help slow you down. Since you did a tune up, did you use a timing light to set the timing, If so was it way off? If not align the harmonic balancer on TDC#1 and see if the rotor is point to #1 post. If you were to turn the crank by hand (rachet on bolt) (ccw and cw) how much play is in it. That will give you an indication of the play in the timing gear set.
thanks for the replies. I will check the timing with a timing light as soon as I can. If it did jump timing, can I just readjust the distributor and be done with it, or is that an indication that the timing chain is about to fly apart? I dont want to swap motors now, this truck needs to run as it is a daily driver. If I have to I can put a timing chain on, but if I can avoid it...it would be very good. The reason I didnt think it jumped timing is that it still starts right up and runs, and i thought that if the timing was a whole tooth off, it would run extremely poorly, if at all. Also, NumberDummy referred to a check valve: what is that? thanks for the help guys, its very much appreciated

or is that an indication that the timing chain is about to fly apart?
You can try just adjusting the timing, but if its off over 20 deg, it probably needs a new timing gear set. You should be able to see how much play is in the chain by putting a breakover bar/socket on the harmonic balance. If needing replaced, you will need to tare the front of the engine down to replace the chain and gears. I would suggest getting one of the double roller chain sets.
Normaly if a engine is back fireing throught the carb indicates timing. But since you said it did it all of a sudden coming off the freeway, this is where you get chain slap. I have had may cars that have jumped during coasting. If you have over 90k miles it's probably due.
The check valve is in the fuel pump.
