7.3 Hesitation Question
7.3 Hesitation Question
Hey Guys. Getting ready to start towing the camper for the summer and have a few issues. I have done some research here but any additional knowledge..reasoning...help is always appreiciated. First of I have a 00 7.3 Limited 4X4 and recently it occasionally will "studder" between 1200 to 1800 rpm. It doesn't do it in every gear and will only do it occasionally and go away. No CEL lights or anything come on. I changed the fuel filter and it still does it. It's almost like my foot comes off the gas and then back onto it for a second or two.
Lastly, the truck has been sitting for a couple of weeks and it has been damp and cool here the past week. I fired the girl up yesterday and my O/D off light was flashing. I pressed the bottom a few times and it was still on. I put the Ex into drive and the light turned off. Everything was fine until a couple of blocks down the road I made a right turn and when I got back into the gas...or diesel pedal there was nothing! The truck was still idling but wasn't accellerating. I shifted into 2nd and it took off. I shifted back into drive and drove it on the highway and in town for awhile and it didn't do it again. And no blinking light on the shifter. No CEL or other warning light either.
The truck runs perfect and the previous owner was very deligent with maintance. Tranny shifts fine and never had a problem until this. It still runs great! I searched here last night and killed a few inocent cold Miller beers trying to figure this one out. Gonna take it for a drive today and hopefully all is well. If not...beer store here we come!
Sorry for the long post but the more detail the better! Thanks guys!

the O/D issue is a very common problem for the platform (X or SD). the wires chafe and short out. see link below on a "easy" fix

wish I could help you on the hesitation. it very well could be the O/D causing the issue. these new fangled Fords get all sorts of pissy when they aren't stroked exactly the right way. Since that O/D button talks with the trans, I'm pointing a finger at it

I am having this same issue. Just started out of the blue. Took it in the the shop could not recreate the problem. Didn't do it for the last few days and now it's back. The dealer said it could be the CPS so I am going to replace it in next few days and see what happens.
I don't have the O/D light but my issue sounds just like yours. It's like the key gets turned off then back on really quick. It e en does it while the cruse is on and does not disrupt or cancel the cruse out when it happens.

hijack...and everyone else too;>)
Mine is a similar but different issue. Im here based on your thread title and thought others with my issue might wind up searching this thread too, so here goes.
5k back, my 02 7.3 van died on the road, was towed, diagnosed and cured with a liberal application of beer and a new CPS, fuel/water filter. Think I'm gonna have to do it again. Already done the fuel/water separator. this problem remains; Like you, no SES/CEL. The rest is a little different.
This time, as before, it seems happy on the cruise @ 70mph until I climb a particularly steep grade where it normally maintains the speed all the way across the mountain. As the grade hits max steepness after a 1.5 mile climb, the 7.3 begins to lose power while bucking and sputtering. It feels like a bike that has lost some sprocket teeth. Backing off on the throttle smooths it out. Reapplying makes it all happen again and the van continues to lose speed until the load lessens (van reached top of the grade). It also seems to have lost a little power all around, though new filter improved that a bit.
Based on this behavior, I would guess the CPS again. Not seeing a CEL has driven me to seek your advice (and drink more beer). Do you think It could be out again after just 4 months and 8K miles? Do I need to be barking at a different tree?

Mine too, about 55 mph when its cold it will miss/hesitate. I changed the cps and it still does it. No codes either. I am debating sucking it up and getting AE instead of taking it to ford and cost me 100 for them to pop the hood

Based on what I have read about the CPS they are hit and miss. I changed mine out due to a leaking O-ring. After doing some research found there are several different colors of CPS. Black being the hardest to find then grey and few other colors that the form said to stay away from. I believe Napa auto or the dealer was the recommended place to buy them. I have a extra one in the truck that I removed so I am going to swap them out and see if the same thing happens.
I noticed mine only does it while on the HWY at cruse speeds. Did a lot of around town driving and never had a problem with it and it is not all the time. Almost like it has to run for a while before acting up.
The guy with the VAN; You may need to take a look at the in tank fuel mod, if it applies to the vans. Yours almost sounds like it is starving for fuel. That would be my guess. Especially since the fuel filter replacement seemed to help. Or there could just be something floating around in there.

Guy with VAN
About a year ago, I replaced the fuel tank due to rust. Never occurred to me that a diesel tank could do that. It had set idle a lot that year. Did that fuel tank mod then.
I also replaced the ICP sensor at that time. The van had similar symptoms then, come to think of it. I've owned this thing since new, BTW. Has 135k on it.
Think an AE or similar may be needed?

Did you ever find out what was causing this
