pontiac aztec transmissions problems.

I got a call from my brother in law that their Aztec 's trans went out in the middle of the intersection. Christmas day, he's on crutches, with his wife and 2 young kids, what a day. When I looked at it, I put it in gear and there was no movement at all. Usually when a trans goes out, doesn't just reverse go a first, not all gears? Anyone have any ideas?

Read about a similar problem on the Pontiac Sunfire forum. Problem turned out to be the shifter cable. (unhooked/ broke something like that) they put the txmision in gear by hand and drove it in for repair. Afraid that's about it for me

No, usually not. There are some failures that can do that, and many that will cause the problems he has.

Anybody check the fluid level? If the level drops too low, it will act like it's in neutral.
It can also be sheared or fallen out t/c bolts, or a blown pump.

I checked the fluid level and it was fine, and it didn't smell or look burnt. I was kind of wondering about the T/C bolts but I thought that would be a long shot.
