4.9L ping
4.9L ping
Has anybody experienced ping with the FI version of this motor? If so how did you fix it?
I have this problem and I realise it could be almost anything so where should I begin to look?
Info on perfomance,
1.HC emmissions slightly higher than acceptable , barely failed test last year. Maybe higher this year.
2.No trouble codes.
3. I use 87 octane and use a light foot , I dont want to pay for 92 octane driving 100mi a day. 92 does help but not eliminate.
4.17-18 mpg hwy
5. Just changed plugs (very clean), Air filter,
Fuel filter.
6. Slight Ping has been there since new and has got worse over the years.
Truck 1993 F150 4.9 E4OD 3.08 rear.
Thanks
John

I forgot to mention,
As I said previously , ping was there since new.Naturally this was unacceptable to me and ford couldn't find the problem so they replaced the engine . All the sensors and wiring on the replacement motor was new so I assume we can eliminate any of those items.

I've had that same problem, along with some hesitation and jerkiness, idle to 2000 RPM. Soaking the Idle Air Bypass Valve overnight in lacquer thinner and blasting a spray can of "sensor-safe" carburetor and fuel injection cleaner down the throttle body bores while running the engine and holding it wide open: does wonders for driveability and the ping is gone, along with all that carbon buildup.
I'm told that I shouldn't do that; some sort of special factory coating inside the manifold that gets removed, plus all that black smoke out the tailpipe is definitely not Sierra Club approved.
Those factors get kind of insignificant; my truck runs extremely well even after 10 years, 200,000 miles, with both of the above treatments at each 3500 mile oil change--and doesn't ping, even burning this glorified charcoal lighter fluid "our" EPA is shoving down our throats.

I had the same problem with my '86 F150 and I found that the truck was running too lean as a result of a very leaky manifold gasket and various other vacuum leaks. After fixing the problem and running 89 octane, I have never had a problem since.
Good Luck

I removed the idle bypass and sprayed it with carb cleaner then I scrubed the inside with a toothbrush. It didn't look too dirty in there.
Ping still remains.
I will remove the throttle body and clean that next but once again , it looks fairly clean.
I replaced the MAP sensor with the one on my lincoln . It looked identical. No difference in drivability or ping.
Will replace the O2 sensor next . Of course that will cost me money.
Is there an easier way to find the solution to this problem?
What about that hand held scanner they sell in autozone ($199 + $99 ford cartridge)? What kind of information will it give me about the engine?

Concerning vacuum leaks,
My engine idles at 600-800 in park which according to the manual is correct.
From what I understand , a vacuum leak will cause a high idle . Did you have this problem in addition to the ping?
