I think I have eliminated all (at least most) of my vacuum leaks. Worst one seemed to be EGR valve. Now that I have messed with the idle mixture it idles a lot better - but seems to run hotter when I let it idle for a while. It does idle well now.
Does too lean cause temp to rise or does too rich? Or does idle mix have no impact?
Not overheating, but well above what it used to do a week ago. Used to be between O and R; temp needle is now at about the A in the "NORMAL" on the gauge.

Hello. The rich/lean mixture really wont affect your engine tempature. If your running too rich the engine will run sluggish, too lean it will run like it's not getting enough gas or missing on a cyclinder or 2. For the engine temp you might want to check the thermostat. Greg.
Mixtures WILL cause temperature problems . Lean running mixtures will cause an engine to run hotter . If the engine temp was normal before you made any carb adjustments & fixed the vacuum leaks , then started to run hotter after the adjustmens & vacuum leaks were fixed , then I would focus on the mixtures . Also make sure you have no other vacuum leaks . Check that the timing is correct also . Dont eliminate any cooling system problems such as the thermostat because anything is possible working on an older engine .
That must be it. Once I got a good idle I kept turning toward lean until it started to miss, then I backed off a little. I wanted to stay "lean" thinking it was cleaner. I had heard somewhere that mix made a difference, I couldn't remeber which one. I think I went too lean. (At 300 lbs, this is the only time I've had a problem being TOO "lean"). Thanks a bunch, guys.
