Broken Dogs
After removing cover, I see that some of the teeth (I understand they are called dogs) have broken off. Not the gears that actually do the turning. Five dogs (unfortunately in a row) are broken off the first gear (I think), nothing seems to be wrong with second gear. I am hopeful that problem with second is that some chip keeps it from engaging well enough to stay in gear. I intend to replace bearing and synchros - I don't want to spend money on the gears. I'd just as soon get a used tranny if I gotta do that.
My Question: Am I wasting my time (and money) putting this thing back together with missing dogs (five in row) (3rd has two missing dogs) or will it work OK?
As always, much obliged for the help.

You know how Murphy's law works - last year I scrapped a SROD that had a stripped input gear and everything else looked OK. Figured I'd never need it and my storage space is worth more than that POS.
I would never re-install any gears that have the clutching teeth missing. If the tips of the clutching teeth are too rounded, it becomes much more difficult to shift, as the two parts must be aligned even better before the "shift" can be made. The tapered end of the clutching teeth make it easier to connect the two parts, while the synchronizer gets the parts to the same speed.
The other problem is that the debris ends up in the sump and can get carried back up inbetween gears, bearings, etc and cause other areas to fail.
My suggestion, get a different transmission (or a better one to rebuild). In the long run, a complete trans costs less than the parts to fix one.
