Also watch for the slide rails on ur disc brakes if u have them.. my mechanic had told me Ford suggests cleaning the brake components every 6,000 miles.. now i dunno if this is true and or if it is year/model specific... but on my '00 X i check them out quite often.. I've had a few rebuilt calipers and alot of rails need cleaned.. They get stuck..chew up a pad.. and before u know it ur rotor has been eaten for dinner..and thats about the time u hear or feel sumthign is wrong.. watch for excessive brake dust on the rims..should be ur first hint..
Just joined the group, I bought a 1990 Explorer Sport, auto, with all the automatics needed. I have one question about the O/D having never used it before and with no one around me able to tell me. If I disengage the O/D, the O/D Off light comes on correct. Secondly when I start the veh it resets to O/D, this is the normal but do I turn the O/D off when driving or leave it on. I am guessing on for fuel consumption. Any help. thanks.

Just leave the O/D engaged unless towing or the transmission is hunting on long grades.
I've had my Expl (exact same as yours) since new and 135K miles.....no drivetrain issues at all....I'm a PM freak and use synthetics. I take care of it, it takes care of me.
Body problems: rear door locks, armrest, rear wiper....overall an A-.
