Well lets take the Volant PowerCore kit into 2 pieces, the actual intake kit, and the PowerCore filter.
The actual intake itself is identical to its oiled filter kits, so going back to previous statements, the S&B is a better performer in that case.
The PowerCore IS a better filter, but I wouldn't say performance wise, more of a longevity / ease of maintenance standpoint.
If it was me, and I was looking for the best of both worlds, I would match up an S&B intake to a universal oilless filter from AMSOIL or even a universal PowerCore. What I plan to do is to find the sizes of the filters used on the volant and S&B kits and offer an oilless replacement on the site. At least until S&B changes their ways and moves to oilless, which, probably, isnt likely, since S&B actually manufactures MOST of the oiled filters out there, for other companies!

Thanks for all your help, I just ordered a S&B from you!
I just looked at your site. I'm considering a slightly used Volant CAI for my 06 5.4 F150. Based on your input here I'm rethinking the S&B. Your site seems to offer two models for my application - one has a clear top cover to the filter box and sells for $229. The other has a S&B monogrammed filter box cover and is priced at $279.
I can't see any difference based on the item description. Am i paying $50 extra for the fancy filter box cover?
Well the cheaper one is an older model, that reuses the factory airbox and simply replaces the tube itself. In fact, I'm not even sure they offer that model any more, so I'll probably take it off the site.
But to answer your question, the $50 in difference of the price is WELL worth the difference in the kits.
I have heard several of you talking about S & B intakes. I am still notsure that I understand exactly what kind of filter element that the S&B uses. oil impregnated? dry? I went to the website for them. I was trying to find information about one for my 2008 f150 with a 5.4. I found the application chart however I could not find out anything about the possible performance/mileage improvement. Does anyone know where I can find that information at? Any information would be greatly appreciated? Thanks !
S&B uses an oil impregnated media that they manufacture themselves. Actually, they manufacture most of the oiled filters out there (as far as i know K&N makes their own), they are very popular with rebranding.
As far as performance gains, I havent seen any documented online to show, the claims I make are purely from personal experience and reviews from my customers
Thanks for the clarification Bob. (Although the box shown in the photo on your site in the older model doesn't look like my factory box?)
Re: your idea for a dry filter replacement for S&B. Do you plan to package the dry filter in the kit (i.e. instead of the supplied oiled S&B) or would one have to buy the kit with the oil based S&B filter AND buy the dry replacement filter then or later?
The tube on the Volant will help bring a little fresh air to the table, but you wont really get a ram air effect. Dollar for dollar, I would still recommend the S&B
One thing to watch out for, on the S&B is the mouting surface for the MAF sensor. The kit I bought, from someone else, was very poorly molded and the threaded inserts were positioned so that even if you cleaned up the plastic flashing (poor molding controls), your MAF sensor would not seat/seal. S&B provided a replacement once they learned of this problem, but the replacement parts wasn't much better. The distance between the threaded inserts and the sensor gasket/seal seating area is too far. The seal on the MAF will not compress and seal.
The short of this is your sensor may not seal and may allow unfiltered air to enter in around the MAF. If S&B can't control their molding process, I'm not sure I'd feel all that confident their filters any better. But as they say it's ISO bla bla bla tested....
