One thing that troubles me is the red tube going nowhere. Is that typical? Second, the throttle plate is always wide open like that. Is that correct? I had my wife start up the truck and press the gas and it always stays open. Shouldn't that be opening/closing? I can close it manually (and then the truck stalls), but it always wants to stay open like that. Is that right?
Well now wait a minute. doesen't that red hose go to the air cleaner thermostat that has another hose running to the manifold like on the cars? Or not? (Guess I better get me a truck, huh?).

this hose is part of the choke heater tube. It is the intake side and goes to the bottom of the manifold. The air cleaner thermostat gets vaccum from the intake.
Yes, if you look at the location of the red hose, it just goes to the air horn under the air cleaner. There is no vacuum in that area. It's just a clean air source for the choke system vacuum.
Ok, another dumb question. What type of carb is this? I just got the Chilton's for 65-86 Ford Pickups and I thought, reading previous threads, that this was a Carter YF 1-bbl carb. But looking at the pic (page 209 if you're following along at home) doesn't look like this at all. Checking the four carbs they diagram, it looks most like the YFA non-feedback, but even that doesn't look right. And that tube isn't shown on any of them. Is the Chilton lacking in this area? Am I maroon?
It's a carter YF. There are few minor changes/variation over the years but they are all the same. I personaly note 1 change in your picture. On my truck the OEM carb and both rebuilds have the choke vacuum tube inlet on the other side.
1 bebuild had a larger fuel bowl and the other was the same as the OEM.
Something to remember. The Carter(R)"Y" series had MANY versions. When buying or swapping for another,be sure to check carefully that you are getting the version that you want.
Also, you will find that the mounting holes have different spacing.Earlier are CLOSER together than the feedback junk. However,IIRC you CAN mix and match the carb lower end to get the correct spacing for the mount holes, and still get away from the feedback junk.
