Tonight i noticed that it sounds like my usual cackle has switched sides of the block. #8 is on the passenger side right? I always assumed that was the rascal that cackled at idle. Now that side seems to be quiet and the drivers side sounds like its doing it? Anyone else experience this. I pulled codes and nothing. The truck still runs great and no smoke unless my foots in it Any thoughts?
Only thing different today than yesterday was a full tank of fuel, and diesel kleen. Im doing Hutch/Harpoon next week to hopefully get working on the whole cackle situation to begin with.
Earlier this summer my 02 started a knock at idle. Several folks have heard it, including Jody. My truck passes every test, but that knock is there. On my truck it sounds like either #2 or #4 injector.
Curtis mine is the exact same way, a trusted mechanic threw everything at it and said there was nothing he could find wrong either. I took it to him right when i bought it, he said dont even worry about it. Hes been doing the 7.3 since 94.
Im sure youve done all the fuel mods including the cackle cure right? Any change?
Actually the knock started a few months after all the fuel mods, but about a month right before adding big oil. Prior to the knock, it was dead quiet at idle and I really enjoyed how quiet the fuel mods made it.
Performance never suffered, and it runs perfectly normal other than the noise. I also heard another truck (a DRW) recently that had the exact same knock at idle.
I've got 103K miles on mine so far. What kind of miles are on yours?
I think my truck does it in drive, at idle, when warm. If you put it into neutral, it goes away. I noticed this at the drive through. Just an odd knock, that I noticed when I first did the 10k mod. Ever try putting it in a stock setting when its doing it under the same conditions?
Ive got 258K on mine and the same knock, I was told by a trusted PSD mechanic that it was the rocker arms, but not to worry about it till I went under the VC to change injectors.
I had a knock at idle as well, started last summer at about 200,000 miles. My engine still had 8 AD injectors (had never had the LL installed) and I always get cackle when it is cold but this was something different. My research led me to believe it was a injector poppet out of clearance. At any rate, new (reman) injectors cured it.
Mine really does it when its warm which makes me think injector because cold i would think a rocker would be louder. Curtis im @ 116k, and was told not to torque rockers until 200k. What do remanufactured jets go for price? I think i will see what happens after tank mods and see what happens.
Mine does it when its cold and not warmed up. the first 10 miles or so. by cackle do you guys mean some kind of restricted spraying sound with a little restricted power? My truck has logged alot of miles so i just let her warm up best i can to try and avoid this. Its definitly not knocking though

Mine is also louder on that one injector when the engine is warm. When it's cold, all the injectors are about the same. As the engine temps start to rise, the injectors get quieter... all of them. As I continue to drive and the engine completely warms up, then that one annoying little bastage starts it's knocking. So I know for sure mine is an injector hammering. It's just weird how for a brief few minutes it doesn't knock at all.

These trucks are normaly a bit louder when the engine is cold, so that's normal.
Curtis we have the exact same problem When you did the tank mods it quit, then came back? Have you +.
seen the new air dogger thing from itp, wonder if that will help? Its alot of cash for a knock though.

I didn't really have issues with cackling or knocking prior to the intank and regulated return mods. My truck always sounded like a normal PSD. After the mods, it was noticeably quieter. Then one day the knock started.
I think whatever is going on with that noisy injector is not going to be fixed with any other fuel system mods.
