My 1986 F-150 with a 300 inline six has continuing electrical problems. The battery loses charge over a few days driving and then the whole thing shuts down. I've done all the normal things to fix this including: replaced alternator (with built-in voltage regulator), replaced battery, replaced battery cables. Nothing seems to work. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Well, here are a few suggestions. First, find out whether you have a short to ground. Use a voltmeter and run one lead to the negative post of the battery and the other to a good ground (engine and ignition off). If there is any voltage, you have a problem. You can also do this with the engine on. Second, make sure all connections to the battery, alternator and started are clean and tight. Thirdly, check that your new alternator is putting out sufficient voltage. I believe that at idle and minimum load, the voltage at the battery should be around 14.5 volts. These aren't in any particular order. Hope you find the culprit soon.
