Well.......I'm pretty sure my torque converter is going out. As far as I know....it's got the original one in it still. I have weird hesitation and sort of a "slippage" from first gear to second. Only when I get on the gas hard though......if I take it easy, it seems to shift normally. What do you guys reccomend for aftermarket? I do mild towing (under 8000 lbs) several times a year...but would like something heavy duty enough to hold up to the mods I've got. Prices and level of difficulty changing it tips are apreciated. Thanks!
Also......I have always regularly changed/flushed fluids on my tranny.....actually had it done only like a month ago again. I know the 4R100 tranny is junked pretty fast without maintenence.....so I have always kept up on it.
How would the torque converter get involved with the 1-2 shift? I'm not following how a 1-2 shift problem could involve the torque converter.
Right on the money - if the problem was common to ALL shifts, the torque converter would be one of the suspects. If there's a problem in the torque converter, though, it usually manifests itself constantly... not just at gear changes.
If, however, it's ONLY the 1-2 shift, that's exactly where the problem lies.
I have a 2000 expy 4.6 a/t and it has the weirdest problem that makes no sense to me at all. Everytime the oil is changed whether I do it or I get it done somewhere, the t/c start acting up. I feels like you are actually driving over a small speed bump while cruising down the road. This problem started a few years back so I dropped the tranny pan, changed the filter,added a drain plug and switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Guess what- problem went away immediately. But now everytime the oil is changed it comes back. So to fix it, I drain out about 4 qts of atf and reservice the tranny. But at 6.50 a quart, this is getting friggin ridiculous!!!!! What in the hell is the connection between a damn oil change and the t/c bump??? And why does 4 qts of new fluid make the problem go away?? I need some serious brainstorming on this one. I wouldnt believe this either if it wasnt happening to me.

Stumped mech in GA
You keep saying "change the oil". Do you mean engine oil, or trans fluid ??? The trans in your 2000 Expedition is not a 4R100. It is probably a 4R70, which requires Mercon "V" synthetic fluid. When you add a few quarts, it evidently brings the chemistry back to near normal, and that eliminated the "shudder" you are feeling. You may have to get the trans flushed and refilled with the proper fluid to permanantly eliminate the shudder. Mercon V is totally different than other fluids, and is what is required in your 4R70.
Yes by oil change I mean engine oil. So you think I should stop with the Mobil 1?
==========================
Changing your oil has nothing to do with your transmission. Check the bottle of your Mobil I ATF. See if it says it is compatible with Mercon V. It will probably say it is compatible with Dexron & Mercon, but not Mercon V. Mercon V can be used where the trans calls for Mercon, but not the other way around. Recently, Ford has discontinued their Mercon fluid and replaced it with Mercon V. Check the handle of your trans dipstick--Does it say just plain Mercon, or does it say Mercon V ???
Mpbil 1 changed recently. It is now MERCON V. It used to be MERCON. All transmissions that say MERCON now use MERCON V as Ford has stopped licensing the production of MERCON. They also changed MERCON V to be compatible with MERCON transmissions.
My bottle of Mobil 1 says Mercon V right on the front. I know it shouldnt have anything to do with changing the engine oil but this happens like clockwork. I mean it is just every time. Thats what I mean- it has me completely baffled. It doesnt just seem like a coincidence. Help!!
its probably the solinoid pack. but if you want a new torque converter anyways, banks is selling on ebay the earlier 7.3s 4-stud for 350 plus 50 shipping no core
