i've been throwing around the idea of somehow putting a cone air filter on my truck. K&N or some other "performance" type filter. i have an 89 f150 with the 351. It's got two tubes coming off the throttle body. anyone made something to convert it to a one tube? or is that too restricting? should i try and find a large filter with two openings? use two sep single inlet filters? anyones ideas or preexisting creations would be greatly appreciated.
I would recomend keeping your stock intake setup. Exposed element filters are a bad idea for a truck unless it spends all its time on the pavement where it is not exposed to a lot of dirt. In addition the cold air kits a lot of people buy do little more than make more noise and suck in a lot of hot air from under the hood.
Also, I am not sure what the intake on an '89 351 looks like, but on the '94s like mine, they basically come with a cold air intake.
by converting the engine from sd to maf. it take this down to one tube and you will notice improvment with the vehicle. someone made a step by step guide to do this i belive
Check out theair box eliminator filter for a Yamaha Raptor 660R any year, I used to work in a bike shop and am probly going to do this myself. The carb inletson a Raptor ar just barley a hair, like MM smaller that the duel tubes. You Canget the filters through numerus bike shops and many different brans, you can even choose foam of cotton pleated filter material. I'll probably go cotton pleated with a outerwear on it. Oh yeah, check out the outer wears for that filter too, they're water prof but let the same amount of air in throu the filter. Way cheaper than those summit kits too.
my issue with the stock air box is... i removed the "snorkle" like peice that route up to the top of the hood bc i added a York Air Compressor. it sits right where the snorkle piece sat. Now i just have this open/exposed inlet to the filter. i've had issues with water getting slung from the fan into the filter box and soaking the filter.

What you need to do then is find or fabricate another snorkel to go around the compressor, installing a completely exposed conical filter won't help. The I6 and 460 trucks had a different snorkel that went to an opening beside the rad, maybe this would fit.
