i have an 83 f150 302 4wd
so i was drviing down the road today and my truck started sputtering and then stalled. so i looked and its not getting any gas. i just put in 25$ last night and i know i didnt go through that much gas and the gauge shows 3/4. so what would be the next thing to look at? it has a mechanical fule pump and 2 tanks.
another thing is when i tried starting it again after i stalled, the starter motor turned over real slow and then aftere a couple more tries wouldnt turn at all. the solenoid clicks but lights and everything are working. could it be alternator?
it sounds like something has caused a drain . it probably is the alternator and maybe the battery too.you can have both tested before replacement at most parts stores.so id take a look at the alternator.hope this helps.good luck
maybe the battery went dead from the alternator not working, and that caused a loss of spark and that shut the motor off. Also, with the motor running with no accessories on, you should be reading at least 13-14 volts at idle. a Fully charged battery will read 12.5-12.75v with the truck off.
i checked the spark from the distributer after it stalled and there was a spark. but the way it stalled seemed like loss of gas cause it didnt just stall, it sorta stuttered like a lawn mower out of gas and then died. but would a fuel pump die just driving down the road? ill check voltage tommrow
Check the fuel pump - dosen't sound like an electrical problem to me (although your battery may be weak). Mine has gone out as I was driving down the road, and I remember having to replace it two times in three years. Of course, once was after it sat for a long time.
If you want, you can test the pump by using a pressure gauge. a mechanical pump puts out between 3-5 psi while cranking. If there isnt any pressure, then your pump is likely bad. However, pumps usually go bad by rupturing the diapragm which dumps fuel into the crankcase, so you might want to check your oil level to see if gas got in there.
ok. should there be any gas in the line leading up to the pump? because there doesnt seem to be so would that mean its something in the tanks? ive known one sending unit wasnt working 100% because the gauge didnt work but fuel would still be pumped from there into the engine
