Howdy all,

I have a 97 Mountaineer 5.0 V8 4x4 automatic. A week ago the O/D light would start flashing after 10-20 min of driving so I took it into the shop. I'm told they got trouble code 782, that I'm not getting first gear and that it is either a solenoid on the valve body isn't working or there's a short preventing the computer from getting a signal from a solenoid.

I've had other electrical things go out that I plan to fix myself becasue they are non-critical but i don't have the means or space to do my own transmission work. Can anyone point me to a table for DTC transmission codes? Also what is a ball park price for fixing this problem? I assume if it's just a bad solenoid it shouldn't be too expensive but it may be more to track down the short if that's what it is. They're charging me $180 labor to remove the pan and have a look at the valve body and I'd like an idea of what else I might have to pay for.

The truck has served me well and I'd love to keep it around a while longer (through the winter) but if we're talking any kind of major tranny work, I don't think it's worth it for a 97 with almost 111K miles on it.

For the record, I heard back that the solenoids were bad. $440 to replace.
