I finally had a moment to check out the performanceunlimited.com sidegapping page. Very cool stuff. As I looked at it, the first thing I thought was DUH - Bosch Platinum +4. The way they got around the premature wear on one side of the electrode was to put 4 of them around it at 90* angles. All the sidegapping benefits without the uneven and premature wear. Too bad I haven't been able to find +4's for either of my vehicles, since they're my plug of choice.
It's turned into a nice day, maybe I'll have some fun with the cut-off wheel on my Ryobi multi-tool (aka Dremel) and my spark plugs to try it. Or maybe I'll wait until my next free paycheck and pick up a cheap set of Motomaster plugs and hack them up. I think I've got Champion Copper in the car right now ... couldn't get what I wanted, so I got some cheaper ones.
Anyone think it would be adviseable to try sidegapping an expensive set of regular Bosch Platinums?

I wouldn't sidegap a set of Bosch's unless you've got the bucks to burn. Some folks say Bosch's don't do well in their trucks/engines. No experience myself, though. For sidegapping, get a set of Autolites/Motorcrafts instead...way less investment and similar results. I sidegapped an old set of Autolites using a pencil, my eyeball, a bench vise and a common hacksaw...doesn't take long at all. Good performance results, too. 8K on these plugs so far and no appreciable wear in day-in, day-out intown and freeway driving. MPG is better, too. Saw your other post...spray some WD40 in that dist. cap. WD40 stands for water displacment for 40 days!
Want to play with side gapping??? Use a cheaper plug. If you side gap a single platnium plug you end up without the platnium point. If you side gap a double platnium you will definetly wear the the cut portion first.
There really isn't a lot of info on the 'net about side gapping oddly. I have been doing a lot of searching and researching on spark plugs, types, performance, etc.
I found a company called Torque Master (www.torquemaster.com) who've apparently been in business at LEAST 20 years and have an interesting spin on plugs I'd never seen, but recently thought would be a great idea and couldn't figure out why nobody had done it yet. The electrode is surrounded a full 360* for what they call a "field effect" spark ... basically the spark shoots out in a disc shape wide open to the combustion chamber.
Has anybody heard of these guys and/or used their plugs? Kind of curious how they perform.
On the previous note, I had no intentions of trying to side-gap the new platinums in the truck ... I was referring to the Champion Copper Plus plugs that are in my car right now. My wife doesn't want me to ... but I think it's a good fun way for me to play with my toy!
