Hi I have a 91 f150 4x4 that I bought with the key stuck in the ignition. The previous owner said he put a new one in but that when he tried it the first time the key wouldn't come out. Any ideas what coudl be causing this?
I would replace the ignition lock cylinder. Sounds like the tumblers are falling, keeping the key locked in. If you get the key out, most likely won't be able to get it back in.
With the key in the ignition, replacing the lock cylinder is a breeze. Costs $15 at Advance or Autozone, and takes about 5 minutes (or as long as it takes to remove and replace 4 screws).
To replace the cylinder, remove the screws at the bottom of the plastuc steering wheel column cover. This will give you access to the lock cylinder removal pin. Turn the key to the "ON" position (don't turn the car over). Press the lock cylinder pin in with a 3mm (1/8") screwdriver or other poking device (highly technical, I know) and pull the entire cylinder out. The new cylinder should be set to the "on" position and should drop right in. Turn the new key to the "off" position and you're done. Replace the bottom plastic shroud and enjoy a job well done.
The one downside is your door and ignition keys are now different, but much better to have a properly working ignition.
No need to remove the plastic from the column to remove the lock cylinder, just get yourself a long thin screwdriver or pick and poke it up in there- my 92 had a hole in the bottom plastic piece that allowed the lock pin to be accessed. You can also have the new ignition cylinder re-worked to use the old key, not sure about the $ though.
on a side note, the reset button for the fuel shutoff on 92+ also has to have the panel removed by the pass foot well and is a candidate for the hole drilling procedure also.
