I replaced the water pump on my 82' F100 (300) yesterday and was pleased at how easy it was (except for having to remove the radiator). Anyway, I just read a previous post regarding adding thread sealant to the bolts when replacing the pump since several of the bolts go through the water jacket. Of course, I didn't do this. I inspected the new pump several times and have no leaks. My question is, anyone else out there do the same thing I did and not put sealant on the bolts threads, and if so, did you develop leaks around the bolts later on? Also, a hint for those 'not so experienced' mechanics like me, if you replace the original fan with a flex fan, wear long sleeves and gloves while working with the new fan or stock up on plenty of bandaids before you start the installation!
I think 3 of the 4 bolts holding the water pump to the block go into the water jacket . Was there any residual sealant left on the bolts when you installed them ? It may be the older blocks had blind bolt holes & didnt require sealant on the bolts ? I would think that if it didnt leak right away it wouldnt leak at all , but who knows . If they leak you ll have to remove them & seal them .
LAST EDITED ON 14-Apr-01 AT 03:37 PM (EST)[p]I did notice that the bolts had some sort of black gunk around the threads because I almost soaked them in gasoline but decided not to. Checked things out this morning before starting engine and no leaks. Ran the truck most of today and still no leaks. I hope it stays that way. Thanks!
