I know this is not an engine related problem but is a problem I am having with a truck mostly like what are on this forum. My 250 2X4 is making a chattering/scraping sound when I am making right turn. It only seems to be there on right turns. I spoke to a guy who is a mechanic/racer who said it was most likely broken plates in the limited slip that are rubbing when I make the right turns only. I asked could it be the bearing in the hub and he said no, it would make noise all of the time. Think he is correct? It's a 10.25 Sterling FF. Can that be fixed by rebulding the carrier and is it something a novice can do ? Never had a rear end apart before. ???? Do you think I am putting a lot of metal in it by occasional driving in the mean time?
I was a novice and I change the ring and pinion, which involves about the same amount of work. How green are you? What else have you done so far?
You will need a micrometer, torque wrench, and the minimum socket set. Removing the carrier can be dangerous, but I was able to pull it off (it is heavy). You will also need the specs on the diffy.
I would get an estimate from a few local shops to see what the cost would be (assuming you find one you feel you can trust). Also, be aware that if you do it yourself, it will take longer, so plan on having the truck disabled for a little while. You could also pop the rear cover off the diff and remove the shavings, if nothing else, you can see for yourself what you are up against.
Did anyone do any axle gear oil changes..... some people do not know to add the limited slip additive or use a gear oil with it added already for our LS axles. Your symptoms sound familiar..... try the additive first.... most AP stores will carry it.
Book states roughness and chatter indicate incorrect or contaminated gear oil..... Check the level, add the additive..refill if low....... then drive the axle so it is warm. Now do no less than 10 figure 8 turns. If the noise/symptoms persist then further investigation is required........cheap stuff first.
I would also advise the right side of the axle should be raised just clear of the ground ..now check for a bad wheel bearing by trying to lift the wheel (use a long bar).
thanks!....I am finishing a garage so I will probably wait till spring to pull it apart but may try the fluid change now...what kind of fluid and additive is suppose to go in it?...how much??...Sterling 10.25...is there a drain or do I have to pull the cover?..If it needs rebuilding I may tackle it ...I have built motors before but never been into a rear end...truck is not primary trans so I can afford the time to pull the rear....It has the factory limited slip which I thought worked ok...but I hear a lot of guys knock....wonder if I would be better off replacing w/ an Eaton while it was apart?.....but"KISS".....I hope the fluid change turns it into a new rear end....THANKS!
