Strange noise Chattering/pinging???

Hey guy's, I just bought this truck a 99 f350 v10 5spd 4x4. I'm having the strangest noise come out of it especially when cold (sometimes hot). It is quite a odd sound. Sometimes clutch in/out makes a difference but not usually. Sometimes when the engine is hot but, again not all the time. Alway's makes the noise when the truck is cold like in the morning on the way to work is worst. I am a mechanic by trade but this has me stumped.

The noise is very sharp and sounds like metal scraping against eachother like a chatter. At first I thought a clutch but the clutch works fine with no noticable slip. I have however noticed that it chirps sometimes grinds going into rev. gear. Always is grinding downshifting only into 2nd, but fine if I'm at idle going into 2nd. Truck has a slight hesitation under acceleration (sometimes). I have no check engine lights on and hasn't been scanned.

Please help. If I wanted a diesel sound I would have bought a diesel. I just want to hear the music of the V10 with nothing else.

Welcome to FTE, bro460

How many miles? When was the last tune-up? Have you checked for metal shavings/chips in the lube of the tranny?

Can you tell if it's in the tranny at all?

Most manual trannies in the Super Duty trucks will have a "sliding" sound, but it's normal for that type of clutch. There shouldn't, however, be a "metal-to-metal" chirp.

Does it do it right after starting and idling? If so get a tube, like a x-mas wrapping paper tube and put your ear up to it to listen around the engine compartment to locate where the sound is coming from. After locating the source of the noise maybe that will eliminate the guessing.

Does the manual transmission have a bellhousing inspection plate on the front? Check that this plate and the plate between the tranny and bellhousing aren't vibrating against anything.

Otherwise, it ALMOST sounds like a throwout bearing.

But yeah, try to find the noise with what wfof250v10 said

It always does it right when starting it up cold. Intermitently after that.

Again, check the bell housing plate. Jam something (small piece of scrap wood, popcycle stick, etc.) against it to be sure its not vibrating, so that it can be eliminated.

I just completed my 4in lift. Now I'll investigate the noise further. Thanks for the tips. I think it is the throw out bearing myself but, I will let ya know. Just wondering if there was a common problem with this before I go crazy looking.

I think I found the problem this morning. The flexplate is scaping against the flywheel. It looks like a one peice. Anyone have a repair idea for this that doesn't invole splitting the engine/tranny? Does it need to be retourqed or something?

my only experience is the mustang trannie's flywheel got bent somehow when rebuilding the engine and trannie. It made a "NICE" scrapping sound when starting and jumping on the gas. Had to replace the flywheel. But it might just be your flex plate. I'd pull the plate off and inspect it to see if any metal on it is scraped off.....good luck

Do you mean the seperator plate between the tranny and engine is rubbing against the flywheel?

On an automatic, the "flywheel" IS a "flexplate".

Based on people here before, I'd check the flexplate/flywheel for cracks around where it bolts to the crankshaft.

Just had someone with a '99 motorhome contact me by email a few weeks back, with almost the same type of noise. Turned out - he had a cracked flexplate.

I've heard of a few (very few) '99 flexplates cracking. Maybe 3 total - your's would be the fourth.

It is a 5spd manual. The flexplate/seperater plate rubs when I pull or wiggle it around. I seems to be tight, but I haven't thrown a wrench at it yet. Why would most of this noise go away when it is hot? I almost never hear it unless it's cold.

Because the crankshaft (and everything else) expands as it heats up, and the flywheel moves further away from the seperator plate.

When you step on the clutch, does it do it?

For the most part it still makes the noise when clutch in/out when it is making the noise.

I have now noticed that in makes more noise when the clutch is in. Still really only makes this noise when it is cold like first thing in the morning. I have decided to replace the clutch and inspect the seperater plate and get the flywheel magnafluxed resurfaced etc...

Any ideas on which clutch to throw in there?
