I took the belt off today and started the truck. Noise is still there. The other thing is that the noise stops and starts while idling - like a bearing that cant decide if its going to lock up or not. Then all of the sudden when the noise starts again it will cause the truck to stall.
At this point Im hoping that it is the turbo instead of something internal.
I guess the next step would be to pull the turbo and look for metal shavings?
Pulling the turbo will do you no good. If it doesn't have play in it, its not the problem. At this point I would be looking at the trans or torque converter. Assuming its an auto you might be able to remvoe the inspection cover on the tranny and remove the nuts from the TC studs and slid the TC back far enough to disengage the flex plate. make sure it is far clear then start the engine, but don't rev it fast cause the engine could overspeed without the TC hooked up. If you don't feel comfortable doing this don't and bring it to a shop you trust. tell them what you have checked and see what they think and what it would cost you to check it out.
Also a mechanics stethescope might help before you get to the above point to pinpoint the niose to an area.
Did you get home ok? You can take off the Y-pipe and turn it around clampa oil soaked rag around it REALGOOD and limp it home. so you don't haave to chew your turbo with your intake valves-careful!

Im looking into this, and I have to admit that I have been cheating on you all. Thats right, I visited a few other forums. It was only one time and it didnt mean anything - I promise!
Seriously though, I did a Google search and found a few other guys that describe the same problem, the key symptom being that the noise goes away when the RPMs rise just above idle. I enjoy doing my own wrenching, but I dont touch transmissions, so I will stop by my local shop and set up an inspection.
Good to hear your got the noise figured out. Too bad its the TC!$$$
No kidding, last week I was hoping that it wasnt the turbo. This week I wish it was a $600-700 turbo. Funny how things work. Not Haha funny in this case.
