Dead turbo?
Dead turbo?
My turbo started making noise today on my way to work. It sounds terrible, but it stops making noise completely above 1100 rpm.
Should I drive it home? Is it likely dead or is it something simple?

Don't run the engine! You may have pieces going into the engine. Sounds like you took out a bearing. Time for PMS, new turbo, bigger injectors, custom tune wooooohooo! Sorry that was for me, hope it all goes well for you. Really bad timeing with the holidays and all.
found some! yes some. i'll pm u the phone #. call after noon tommorrow. he even has 1 new one thats a take-off from a crate motor. he'll treat u right!

HOLD THE PHONE!!! Who wants to bet me its the EBPV???? Taking bets and feelin lucky!!
On the intake side of the turbo just udner the intake tubing there is a two wire connector bolted to the side of the turbo. unplugg that and see if your noise goes away.

I had been having cold start issues before, and after reading a few threads on that issue, I did unplug EBPV about a week ago. Truck did run better, but when this noise began I started to wonder if I had unplugged the right thing.
I plugged it back in today and tried to restart truck. It turned over but no start. I got only white smoke from the tailpipe and strangely some smoke from the underside of the engine on the passenger side (around the exhaust manifold, but there is also some kind of metal tube running from the front of the motor an back under there). I checked the oil and it was (I hate to admit) two quarts low, so I added some and it started just fine.
The noise is still there (and boy is it loud) but only from idle to about 1000 RPM.above that the boost seems normal.
If it is the EBPV would it simply be rattling around in the bore until the turbo blows it open?
I also think its your EBPV. The connection on it is right infront of the impeller housing. The EBPV opens back up around 1100rpm I think.
However, you said that it was unplugged initally when this noise occured.
What about a massive oil leak coming from the EBPV? That oil is going somewhere...

idk. but if anyone ever needs one, gimme a holler. the guy can always get performance parts, and ford parts much cheaper than stealership, and has a complete junk yard of trucks 1995-present. he rebuilds wrecks.
Here is a bone stock turbo even though it says it has a banks (which it does, but the banks wheel is a stock design). This guy is a great guy to deal with with great turbo's.

Ok easy to check the turbo. remove the intake tubing at the turbo and with a cold engine grab the end of the intake wheel with two fingers. try to move the wheel in and out inline with the turbo shaft. It shouldn't move at all. .008 of an inch is the spec so you won't be able to feel it. if you can feel it you need at the very least a rebuild kit but more likely a new turbo. also check the turbo for side to side play. some will be felt but make sure in either direction the wheel doesn't hit the housing.
