I beleive that I have a boost leak; under load 1700+ RPM I can hear a whooshing noise from under the hood aside from the regular turbo noise. No load= no sound. No boost gauge unfortunately. Fuel mileage is tanking, granted I am running blended but after 275 miles, 240 of which are hwy 55-60, I'm getting 14mpg hand calculated, down from 19 on the same drive on straight #2.
I tightened my IC boots about 5k miles ago and will check them all again, I'm just wondering if there are any other typical leak areas that I should check as well.
If you have a compressor, you can make a super cheap boost leak detector and only have to disconnect the intake before the turbo and hook it up. Much easier than fooling around with the entire intake plumbing. Then look for soot like Pocket said.
Not to high-jack the thread but...TENN01PSD350 - You mention using a compressor and some kind of rig to test the intake plumbing - can you elaborate on it please?
Make one of these ,everything here can found a Lowes or home depot ,hardware store.then take the intake hose off the turbo and put this on and tighten the clamp turn on your air compressor turn regulator down to about 20 lbs and put hose on the fitting, open the valve and listen and feel for leaks. The leak detector is from cookie88's gallery.
One thing to check. when I started my PSD when it was about 20f outside ,I had 3 seconds of smoke comming from the back of the turbo. I checked the clamps, and the clamp from the babies butt to the turbo was a little loose. I tightened it up a little (7/16 deep socket) engine is quieter and I must have more boost.(no guages installed yet).Sounds like a new truck!!!
