I'm sure Brian makes a great transmission and if money wern't an issue I'd love to have one of his, but reality and a budget dictate that I find another option. In reality I don't need the uber performance that the BTS delivers, I haul an 18' open bow in the summer months and an 18' trailer with my antique tractor occasionally. The truck with a good stock transmission is already overkill for most of my needs. When my torque convertor failed and the Ford dealership failed to diagnos it until the third overheating resulting in a transmission failure I looked around for a reputable local transmission rebuilder. I live in a fairly rural area where people who don't do good work don't stay in business long. Everyone I talked to pointed me to one guy whoes been doing ONLY transmission repairs for 19 years and was supposedly fantastic. After my experience with the dealership which cost me $1800 and still left me without a trans I was gun shy, but I didn't have much choice so I trusted those I'd asked and took it to Tom. He told me up front how much it would be and three days and $1900 dollars later he had me rolling again. When I went to his shop (he stayed an hour late to accomidate my schedule) he had saved every piece of the trans and took nearly an hour going over all the parts; pointing out what had failed and why. Telling me what he'd upgraded like boost actuators and such and why and what difference I should expect. I've put about a 1K miles on his transmission (I call it his because the only thing original is the case) and it NEVER felt this good. Very positive shifts, great pulling torque, etc. He also put in an upgraded torque convertor and a new, larger OTA cooler and lines. My point here is that while I'm sure every accolade Brain has recieved here is deserved, it is possible to find a guy locally that also does great work and won't rip you off. While I like to support our supporters I also believe in keeping my money in the local community. I also like the fact that if there is a problem I'm 8 miles from his front door. Just my two cents (that's about all I have left)
First of all, that is great. I doubt that there is anyone here that is going to find fault with you getting a great deal and local customer service is the best customer service in my opinion. If I could find a guy close by, that had that level of ability and could build one the way you described, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use him instead of Brian, because like you, I occasionally tow a 2 horse slant and do a little plowing and light hauling and thats about it right now. It is my daily driver otherwise so that BTS is probably a little overkill for me too.
Secondly, as has been pointed out before in a somewhat heated thread this past summer, BTS isn't a sponsor of the site. Brian has gotten a lot of free publicity here primarily because he does good work. AYou certainly pay a premium for it, but his product and customers seem to speak for themselves to the point that he feels that he needn't sponsor the site here. I am a little disappointed by that decision, but not enough that I won't use him when the time comes.
dieselholic-I think on the same lines. I'm not racing or tearing up the countryside 4wheelin. This is my everyday cab for three kids and wife. Have had a day to re-think and $3900+shipping and install compared with my local guy $2998.including shipping, install and ford"s 100,000mile or 5 year warranty has hit the point. My business will be local and he's 1 mile down the road!
I don't think that is the issue. I mentioned to him about the site and he said he would consider being a sponsor. However, he is very busy and is even hardpressed to return business calls. I was at his shop and got to see that he and Cale had 5 or 6 stickys to return calls at any one time and I was there all day.

Nothing wrong with that at all, Mike. Glad it worked out for you!! I think you're right -- not everyone needs a BTS. If I lived where I grew up and mine puked, I know exactly where I'd go. In fact, he'd probably let me work on it with him and I'd learn a hell of a lot, too...
