Trans temp

What is the typical operating temp for the tranny in my 5.4L? The Edge said it was between 165-170 on a 400 mile trip this weekend. It got up to 180 when I got into my neighborhod and hit several stop signs. It was about 80F outside.

Mine runs from 144 to about 160 on a normal day.

I've read a lot of guys on here say tranny temp should not exceed ambient (your case 80F) plus 100 degrees. So 180 would seem ok. Probably depends where you are reading that temp from. Mine is in a test port on the driver's side of the tranny. Has never exceeded 190F even when towing a #8000 trailer in the hot summer. When in OD the temp will drop about 20-25 degrees compared to only in Drive.

where is the sensor the edge is getting its temp from?

On my trip from Central Florida to South Georgia, my Edge was reading about 150-160 the whole way. That was tonight. Just got in.

150-160*F is normal while not towing or hauling a load. The EDGE picks up the trans temp from the stock sensor that the PCM uses to measure the trans fluid temp.
