listen guys on most chain sets they have alignment marks on them. if its a stock engine
then set it up to stock specs. if the engine isnot stock!!!! then it will be different. but even on non stock engines you still line the timing marks up. and you should be good.
even on my race engines i line the marks up and time it at what it is suposed to be.
come on guys, this isnot rocket sceince!!

That's the point. If stock means retarded timing, some of us don't want that. If that's what you want, so be it.
It seems like the confusion is, what is straight up? I didn't know myself untill recently when I tore into mine. ...The simple answer is, it's the mark directly above the (crank) keyway...If you have a sprocket that does not have a mark directly above the keyway you're going to have a difficult time setting it straight up.

Have you ever seen a crank sprocket with 3 different marks?
What is the timing on a race engine supposed to be?...I really don't know.
hey guys,
i've built alot of engines of all kinds, weather be gas or diesel. but to answer your question, is that a 429 chain set will work, it my give you more mid range rpm or torque then the 77' 460 cid would, and if you want to be tech about it! time it to
68 specs you will notice a difference,it'll wake the engine up. but be carefull time it to 68
specs.
if it doesnot sound right or run right, play with the timing until you get it right or the way you want it to run. or until there is a happy medium.
I just fired it up today,I used the older timing" pre smog" set in my 79 460,didnt have my tach set up yet, have it about 10 BTDC.Where should I be with the timing, and at what RPM?
it did fire up? i'm not sure on this issue. you may have to play with the timing until the engine runs free, doesn't sound labored. and starts when it is hot or at operating temp.
hook your light up and take some readings while you do this. and a tach as well. and see where it runs the best. you should be able to find a happy medium.
