I just bought a '92 F250 With a 7.5 (460) and the fuel economy sucks i dont have the cash for a intake system yet so i just want to open up the stock box a little. When i took the system apart i noticed that about half way to the manifold there is a plastic piece that squeezes the intake down to about 1'' dia. per intake hose. What is the point of this and can i alter it?
It's an air silencer and yes, you can chop off the "funnels" with a hacksaw. I don't know how much of an improvement you'll see with a stock motor but it is one of the steps listed in the Banks "460 PowerPack" installation instructions. Another "free" mod from those instructions is to advance base timing from the normal 10 degrees to 14 degrees. Those changes and a K&N type filter element should be good for 20-30 hp (half of that due to the timing advance). The biggest improvement you can make without opening up the motor is probably adding headers and a catback. These motors had very restrictive stock exhausts, especially the manifolds. You will see a marked improvement in power, especially as it pulls to the factory shift points under wide open throttle.
We have had discusions about the air horns before and from what i have gathered if space allows go get that k&n filter that has the 2 hose attachments. Get it as close to the throttle body as posible so the air dosnt have to go up make a turn go up again make a turn again and then reach the throtle body. It makes the air less turbulent and more free flowing the less directions it has to change, I havent done it yet because my filter is in the mail somewhere. All depending how cheap you want to be you can cut off your cat and muffler and just replace those if your like me and are in a state that dosnt check that stuff. Those together along with changing the timeing should get you almost 40hp and if your easy on your gas you could get probly 12mpg easy, and a tune up wouldnt hurt if you have high miles.

I doubt those bends in the intake tube would even cost 2 hp, on the other hand by reconfiguring the intake to draw in HOT engine compartment air instead of the cooler air picked up by the airbox snorkel the engine ECU is going to retard timing and over-richen wot enough to COST YOU 10-15 hp under high load conditions. Net gain: -8 to -13 hp. That's why Banks doesn't eliminate the stock airbox with their PowerPack, they just replace the air filter element and the airbox lid with less restrictive parts.
Cut the horns out and the difference is definetly noticible in the sound and power. havent had it driving long enough to notice a difference in the economy yet. And that link was very helpful because im on a strict budget and was not sure what to center my attention on first
I did it a few days ago and it seemed to help the throttle response was a lot smoother and for the millage i think i'm going to be getting a little better i got 103 miles and i still have 1/2 a tank left..It says you only lose a little torque and you gain horsepower...Its a little louder but not bad...I never really stomped on it super hard since i don't want to waste my gas right now and the roads are slippery....
i just finished a two day 1750km road trip and i noticed a huge jump in my economy! i went from 10 to 13.7mpg. not too bad considering there was some heavy throttle climbs and a 2700rpm cruises for hours on end.
wow, thats quite a jump. i just cut mine the other day. i need to fill up soon to check my mileage. for the record, i don't notice much of a sound difference. it feels like throttle response is a little better but it could be in my head too
ummm it sounds sweeter...And there is a little more power...Its really easy to do 20 minutes or less...But the thing is here last week the weather was 30 degrees and this week the weather was 0 degrees so i think it had a little effect on it...Once the temp it more constant i'll try it again ...But its a cheap mod....I would think it should help on the long journys though....
