I'm changing the timing chain on a 77 460 , I have a timing chain set for a 68 429 . This should work and take me back to the pre smog era . does this sound right ?
7 salinas 3,
they should be the same. compare the two chain sets. i'm pretty sure that they are the same but, set your timing at 460 specs. and not the 429 specs. however they may be the same.
I'm looking for the straight up timing, the crank gear has the " o " above the key way on the new set, I did a cross referance at the auto parts store it is the same part number . I have not yet removed the timing cover on the 460 to mach the old one.
those are your timing marks. i thought they were the same. weather it has an "o" or a dot they should be set up the same. cam down, crank up. make sure you #1 is at top dead center first. before you dive in and pull it down. meaning your cam gear the mark
should on the bottom of the cam stroke. the crank gear should on the up stroke. your mark will be on the bottom and your crank mark faceing up on top. kind of looks like this [:] weather it be zeros or dots it sets up the same. now get after it.
sorry man just trying to help.
ok!

The 429 chain will work. But I'm not sure the 429 chain set is any different today than the modern 460 chains sets. You will need to compare them. Many of us go with aftermarket chain sets with 3 keyway settings to get back to TDC. But like I said compare them.
listen man,
straight up they will interchange!! its the same part number as the 460 cid motor.
use it. you already have the parts. just get the gaskets and your set! come on guys were suposed to be helpful here! go with the stock chain set and you should be fine.
set your timing marks up and put it all back together a fire it off. note look at your distributor rotor make sure its at #1 w/ #1 up tdc.

Ranger is right they will interchange, but I think his question, by referring to the "pre-smog" days is will he loose the 8 degree retard that was dialed in from the factory in the early '70's? (I think it was '72?)
I'm guessing it is possible that the '68 chain doesn't have the built in cam retard, but to be sure you will need a degree wheel. I agree with others that reccomened the aftermarket chain with the multi-index bottom gear. Advancing the cam will provide more low end torque. I would also add that I wouldn't install anyones "silent chain", I'd go with the double roller, it will be the last chain you put in that motor.
One more thing, replace that pesky bypass hose with a piece of quality hose with braided steel liner. You know high$$ the stuff, Earls, Russel etc. If you have ever been wronged by that hose, you will understand and this will prevent that sucker from ever blowing again.
Guys I think the timing chain set will be the same the retard came from moving the holes in the end of the cam that the gear bolts to. Go with the Cloyes double roller you won't ever have to mess with it again.

No, it's the crank sprocket they changed
No matter what, if you want straight-up the "o" is directly over the keyway on the crank, nothing (as far as I know) is changed on the cam sprocket....Anything else is, well, retarded.
