Melted battery cable

The other day I went to start my 66 F250, and it wouldn't start. Was in a hurry, so I took my other car. Today I went to jump it and noticed the positive cable burnt thru near the starter solinoid. My question is, what would cause this? the previous owner put in a new solinoid and alternator. It's a newer cable too.

Shorts cause heat, the cable may have been nicked or damaged. Or it could not handle the current being pulled through it.

If the post wasn't tight or it had been made cheaply... a bad connection is like a very small wire... the amount of load pulled through the bad connection causes it to heat up and burn through...

Make sure the new cable is heavy enough and good and snug with all terminals cleaned... While your at it, also check the other connections.
